the perfect amount of resistance. it WILL NOT move by itself or by accident.. but it will not hold and grip creating a sort of stuttered, oppos I moved it too much feel. my question is how heavy and how much inertia and when I was young I used to read and day dream about mesa boogie guiatar amps./.. word is that you shape the sopund and the bass/treb/etc knobs arent independent and tjey all affect each other and so subtle changes in one affect otehrs but I imagine those knobs have to at least have good knbo feel ALSO i want a mouse with a free wheeling scrool wheel made of something like depleted uranium or platinum/iridium and on super amazing bearings so you can spin it and it just spins for decaeds

I have a knob.

Proper knobfeel is not created by resistance, but by inertia. The knob must be as heavy as possible.

imagine a knob where the outside surface is like a trackpad and doesn't actually rotate. you have to pinch it but slide your fingers at the same time. that would freaking suck.

Apple Magic Knob. A fixed cylinder with touch sensors but it doesn't actually rotate. Magical and revolutionary. $299.95.

the diameter of a knob is not to be dismissed either so right now imagine a knob... approx 5cm/2" diameter... 2/4" thick. knurled.. a VERY heavy metal. what is the finish on the front? a pattern? some kind of ancient homosexual rune? perfectly matte finish is what I want in this. machine marks would be acceptable if done tastefully

echinopsis posted:the diameter of a knob is not to be dismissed either eh, that knob seems too short. I'd go 0.75" or even a full inch. and obviously it has to be fluid-damped.

um what????? fluid damping IMO introduces an unpredictable element ???

should aknob be able to be turned with the fingers alone or does the wrist need to get involved due to it's deeply substantial inertia

echinopsis posted:um not at all. fluid damped tripod heads are used to enable smooth pans for cameras. it is a far more reliable resistance than a purely solid-state system ideally, you have a combination of both fluid-damped and inertial, enabling both precision and free-spinning. maybe if you pull the knob out until it clicks, you can spin it rapidly.

The reduction drive is integrated with the fluid damper and pulling it out switches the clutch to the other position. I need to find the pictures I have of my government radio whose tuner has a rolled scrolling paper ribbon for frequency readout and which has a zero-backlash geartrain for precision calibration with a friction clutch to make sure you don't break the ribbon
