yeah there's nothing thematically in the godfather part 2 that's not already implicit in godfather part 1. it's nice to be able to call someone a "fredo," but the flashback structure feels arbitrary and unmotivated and so ends up hindering it, where godfather part 1 was long and epic but has a straightforward and powerful throughline

overall coppola's worst film from the 1970s

I like them both equally, honestly. I found Michael Corleone's slow turn from do gooder war hero to murderous mob boss as probably one of the most fascinating portrayals of a character's change in a movie ever.

Also the main theme owned so hard even Slash did a cover of it :

Marge, I'd like to be alone with the sandwich for a moment.

I watched it but I had to break it up into like 3 chunks which kind of defeats its own purpose

Would rather just watch the originals in order.

He's soooo dreamy...

godfather part ii is a trite, overlong bore that ramps up everything in the original without ever adding anything meaningful to it. we already knew michael went to a dark, paranoid place that shut out his family by the end of the first one, we didn't need four goddamn hours of him continuing to do so with no variation

well, really more like two hours because some of it is taken up with vito's backstory, which is tedious myth-building horseshit that actually gives us an origin for "an offer he can't refuse" and a lame callback to his love of oranges. everything that made vito an interesting, human character in the original was stripped out by this nonsense.

it's like every awful sequel trope gathered together in a single movie and i will never ever understand the love for it

The real star of the films is that delicious looking treat Connie gives Don Altobello at the Opera House in Part III. Don't care if it is laced with strychnine, wanna take a big ol' bite out of that thing.

In all fairness, I have to concede Sethsez actually makes some reasonable points on the necessity of Part II, it doesn't really add much and some of the mystique of the original is lost in the process. Still love it though, Michael owning that senator and making chumps of the Senate Committee owns, as does the stone cold way he closes the door on Kay when Connie sneaks her in to see the kids.

Even when Godfather 2 isn't as focused or great as the first one, it doesn't mean it's utter dumpster fire kill it from orbit garbage. It's still a good movie and it's nice to watch both.

In part 2, Anthony becomes more like his father to the point where Kay becomes afraid of her own child and has an abortion rather than give Michael another son.

then in part 3 he's a fat opera singer

I actually just bought the Godfather restoration blu rays so I am going through the movies for the first time in maybe a decade. I am finding I really enjoyed Part 2, maybe more than Part 1. I can't really pinpoint why exactly. I thought the flashbacks to Vito were actually quite good and well done.

I am going to watch Part 3 for the first time ever tonight.

uhh there was a lot going on in this movie

First, cousins wanting to gently caress. Or hosed? Just really strange. You have a 30 something Andy Garcia playing a character who is supposed to be like early 20s I guess, who seduces his 16 year old cousin, despite everyone else wanting to gently caress him apparently. We have Michael who is overcome with guilt so he is just throwing money at anything, despite him being cold as ice in part 2. I felt like it was never explained why people wanted him dead. Zasa was the only one that had a reason but he was killed off pretty quickly. So it was the other dons? I guess for the power or real estate? But the family didn't seem to be active at all during the entire movie until the end, when Vincent is now the don for some reason and orders a bunch of kills. We didn't see any action from the Corleone family outside of Vincent doing deeds beforehand.

Beautiful shots in this movie though.

Yeah, it's a total mess, but it definitely has its moments. Compared to 1&2, it's a steaming pile of crap, but it's still above and beyond the quality of movie produced during its time period. I particularly like the assassination scene. An opera climaxing in an unjust execution as a horribly corrupt man of god is put down with a pen.

I guess the point of 3 is to redeem Michael as a character(I mean, the plot point).
