Propaganda film describes any film that serves explicitly as a means to mobilize an ideology. This thread is not for talking about whether or not the latest Marvel movie is secretly propaganda, just for posting cool propaganda films. Pre-WWI Propaganda The first propaganda films were made by Vitagraph in the late 1800's. They were silent shorts concerned with the Spanish-American war. Here's an example of these early films and a short history of the studio. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2Sutv2zhT4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiOXH7LqgL4 There was also a Romanian propaganda film made around 1912 called Independenţa Romāniei. It was the biggest budget Romanian film until 1970, and at 122 minutes it's a lot more substantial than the Vitagraph shorts. Here it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA9J6funJis One of the most influential films of all time, D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation, is regarded by many to be propaganda as well. At over 3 hours, it's very exhausting (and extremely racist), but it is probably worth checking out at some point. World War I Propaganda World War I was the first time that movies were used as a means for propaganda in a widespread way. Britain, Germany, America, and France all produced cinematic propaganda during this time. Here's a few of these films. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iFnce-4e74 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LaRcJlNXe0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0uE7rznwCM Interwar Propaganda Between the two world wars, too much happened to talk about in any real detail here. The October Revolution in Russia would prove highly influential in the development of propaganda films. The development of modern editing would be inextricably tied to the work done in Russia during this time, especially the work of Sergei Eisenstein. Here are a couple of his movies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcUKH9hQKWw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k62eaN9-TLY There were also many movies about American bravery during the previous war that, technically, qualify as propaganda. Here's a great one by King Vidor, The Big Parade. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mdey8VOA72o Nazi propaganda also started here. Here's Triump of the Will, from 1935. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHs2coAzLJ8 World War II Propaganda During World War II, both Axis and Allied forces made a great deal of propaganda. The stuff that gets the most recognition are the US and Nazi stuff, though a lot of the films from other countries was interesting too. Here are a few films from both sides. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v5QCGqDYGo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIQp31Oyn70 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eRGQq32ZiE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPWXe_B5pPo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taA1cr85-L8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bTEf1N_ij8 Cold War Propaganda The Cold War was fought so quietly and lasted for so long that, oftentimes, it is difficult to tell if something is explicitly propaganda. Some people would lump in everything concerning Nuclear Annihilation, but that feels too broad to me. Anyway, most of the Hollywood propaganda of this era are copywrited, and a lot of the USSR stuff no longer exists. Here are a few examples that I can post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4yjAb6eoCw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jETJt_zbnKk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8D6d6_-Vngo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESKQvnPAkx0 After the end of the Cold War, propaganda films in the Western world are much less common, though they still get made sometimes. Other Propaganda There have been many other countries that have produced propaganda during these eras and outside of them, feel free to post some. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4U_acIJesI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm_CjWTKvI0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaBOZspv9m4

The ongoing production of North Korean is largely unwatchable because of the low quality sets, cameras, film stock, acting, etc but they're unsettling to watch because you can practically feel the metaphorical off screen gun forcing the men and women into producing feature length songs of praise for their leader. There's a ton on YouTube and DPRK government maintains their own YouTube channel to spread the word about them if you're curious enough to flick through.
