interviews are dumb and bad but you gotta do them sometime. be a cool dude with the recruiter because he or she doesn't know computers and can't relate to autists. then when you're talking with actual engineers try to talk through your thinking process and state your assumptions. be confident and if you don't know something ask questions that will lead to figuring out the right direction.

dunno why it bothers me, it's not like i give any real shits about "company loyalty" or w/e, but it does

the reason they do it is simple: it takes effort to switch jobs and no effort to stay where you are. many people are unwilling or unable to put in that effort and will live with small raises. if you gave decent raises then you would have to pay everyone more, even the ones that aren't willing to jump.

If i have to threaten to quit to get that raise out of you, you're just going to find a way to get rid of me anyways and its and admission that you were paying me less than you thought i was worth. Companies expect this weird samurai loyalty ityool 2016 (like the old days) despite not having labor organization or pensions (like the old days)

you're making it too dramatic. this isn't a breakup. you tell your boss that you have a better offer. if he wants to retain you, he will work to get you the terms you need to stay. it's not his money, he doesn't give a poo poo if the company cuts you a bigger check every pay period. in fact, most bosses would be happy to pay their employees more if they found a justification for it that goes around HR's compensation restrictions. this is that kind of excuse.

there are two caveats. one is that you have to be fairly sure they want to retain you. and two, you can't bluff. if they fold you have to take the other offer or you will be their bitch from then on.

amazon's stupid hiring practice is actually a filter. if you aren't willing to put up with that, you aren't willing to put up with their lovely culture and treatment of employees, so you shouldn't work there anyway. consider it their way of doing you a favor and warning you how terrible they are.

I've had phone interviews where I could literally hear the guy typing my questions into google and have him read me some answer from a website. upon deeper interrogation these things always fall apart because if they don't know the answer, finding it on the internet doesn't actually give them any insight into the details of the issue. any competent interviewer should be able to sniff this out easily.

CS teaches you algorithms and complexity, which are things you will need to understand when you're doing advanced software development. it does not teach you how to code or develop software. most graduates are bad at coding and will likely never use the knowledge they learned in school because who cares if the performance of your business java middleware garbage is O(n^3)?

take home projects should clearly have no practical application. I'm not doing free work for you.

also you better have a pretty loving compelling position for me to even consider doing a take home project. if your recruiter hit me up and is trying to convince me to give your company a shot, there's no way I'm doing that.

i found 4 of the 10 or so on linkedin. some were on my interview and some were not. im planning to send them a friends request/thank you for the interview note. would you do it

anytime anyone has ever written me a follow up email (back when we used to give out business cards to interviewees), it was weird and I thought less of that person. yes, I know you can look up and figure out the answer to something I asked you in an interview. I'm not sure what telling me that after the fact is supposed to prove. it's not like if I was on the fence it changes my mind. you just become the guy that wrote me that awkward email.

How long to stick it out for xp before trying for a non junior role somewhere else?

There are fundamental problems here that... Won't (Probably could, but lol, no) be fixed

Also gin, lol

basically the minute you have a title change you should delete QA from your resume and never ever mention it. say you've been a dev the whole time. you stick around until you are a good enough dev to get hired elsewhere. that means having enough experience to talk about projects you've worked on.

nobody cares about what your answer is here as long as you don't say anything negative. you are "looking for a new challenge" or "eager to learn new things and explore how other industries do this and that" etc. don't mention money and don't say you hate your job, you were passed over for a raise, your boss was a dick, etc.
