All, 2017 is almost upon us which means it is time for the various threads to be rebooted. If you want to make a new mega thread for 2017, feel free to do so at any point after Christmas. If you're the OP of an existing thread and want to close it and reboot it feel free if you want to hand it off that's fine too. I'll try to stay on top of closing threads and all that jazz. On the first of the year, after I wake up from boozing, I will more than likely just close any outstanding threads and leave the task of making the new thread to some enterprising fellow. Why am I doing this? Because I can? Also, it keeps things from gumming up Radiums lovely code (rumor has it). TL;DR, most threads will be closed on the first, if you want to reboot it and capture some of that sweet OP karma please do so after Christmas! Now on to other business. It might be gay or whatever but I'm pretty proud of GiP. It is one of the few online spaces populated by veterans and police that isn't a dumpster fire. I'd like to keep it that way. Going forward, I'm committed to trying to be as fair and equitable with my moderating as I can while maintaining the non-poo poo status of the subforum. I remain available via PM for any questions or concerns about moderating decisions. I have a few general "goals" for this coming year. (Goals is a general term in that if they happened I would be thrilled but won't fundamentally change the subforum culture to make them happen.): 1.) New blood. The forums, in general, seem to think we're a pack of racists or worse. That isn't the case. I would like more people to come join in our inane discussions about whatever especially if they're Veterans. 2.) Old blood. I wouldn't mind if some missing persons came back -- provided they don't act like complete asshats 3.) More content. Megathreads have the downside of consolidating discussion and some people find them impenetrable. We've had some success with limited run uni-topic threads (TV shows, and games come to mind) and I would like to foster that. I can't provide specific examples but in general, if you want to make a thread, make the thread! Worst case scenario I'll gas it but I feel like it should be pretty obvious if you're making a lovely thread. On a final note, I'm going to leave this thread open to provide for feedback and brainstorming. Let's make GiP great again! V/R N4I

Obviously, some threads would stay (dogs, resource, get help, service-specific) but I wouldn't mind breaking up some of the other threads into independent discussions.

That's basically it. The only rule is threads can't be based on traditional megathread topics, just for January, just for shits & giggles. Dogges, get-help, and F-35 should be grandfathered in. Otherwise, chaos must reign.

Restart the branch and chat threads, leave the other running threads (idiots, ect) Have one perm mod, and one rotating ik. green dicks instead of grenades for plat regulars. standardized probations instead of the "someone is in a pissy mood so here is a month for posting while shim". There is literally zero reason to give any of us more than a week for anything outside of trying to contract a hit on someone. organize and send out a search party for Actus Rhesus, KFF and the other 2-3 MIAs

That said, people whose only interactions with the community are poo poo-posting and weak troll attempts are going to continue catching long probations. Some specific things I've been thinking about : The drunk thread versus general chat Long-standing GIP tradition and kind of a third rail. Personally, I think it's weird to share things you jerk it to but it's extremely enlisted so part of the culture. It isn't going anywhere. That said there's overlap between it and the old civilian thread that I'd like to kind of break apart. I tried combining the two which didn't end well because it wound up being a chat thread that wasn't work safe. That's no good. Here's what I'm thinking: - keep the drunk thread, basically have it as the tits and rear end thread, please no inline porn - Dad Chat gets rebooted into a general chat/lounge thread kind of like the old civilian thread that being said I would kind of like to see some of the common topics spun off into a new thread. Make an awesome pizza/roast? Make a new thread about it, or start a cooking thread. That sort of thing. Games Thread I'd like to reboot the video games thread. I'd prefer an OP that's able to update a list of gamer tags/steam names. If you're up to the task, shoot me a PM. Current Events Wew boy here we go.... This thread is good when it's talking about current events and terrible when it's rehashing the Bernie/Hillary eternal holy war or trying to lay elaborate ideological traps to "own" other posters. Yes I'm guilty of this -- most of the regulars in the thread are. I'm considering making this bullshit haram in the new CE thread. I can't completely get rid of political chat but the minutiae really needs to go in CSPAM -- the forum is good, there's good discussion there, it's like what D&D should be, check it out. This is a thorny issue that's going to be tough to navigate but I really don't like feeling like I'm going to develop an ulcher when there's 50+ new posts in that thread.

Instead of one current events megathread, why not make it a weekly news/views thread. That way people can still panic/vent, but we can at least start fresh every week without as much insanity. It's honestly hard to actually find the current events in that thread sometime.
