So, in the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, Luke is somewhere far out in an arctic blizzard. The fact that he's far out can be concluded from a little bit later on, when Han Solo goes out on a search & rescue for him and they tell him "Your Ton-Ton will freeze to death before the first marker". Skywalker gets attacked by this Snow Beast that kills his Ton-Ton and drags him back to his cave and sticks him into the cave roof, hanging by his feet. When he gets to, he uses the force to get his lightsaber back and the snow creature attacks him. He's got a light saber. He swipes the creatures arm right off. He's now standing in a nice cozy ice cave with a one-armed ice creature in front of him and he's wielding a lightsaber. He could just simply point it and walk forward and the creature would be shish-kebab. A few flicks of his wrist and the entire beast would be BBQ mince meat. Does he do that? No, instead he pisses his snowsuit and runs out of the cave, right into a freakin' sub-zero blizzard, on foot, God knows how far away from their base. So, instead of just going "Zoom Zoom Zoom. You're a nice pile of roasted meat now, snowtard. I'm gonna sit the storm out right here", he rushes straight into what would have been certain doom, if it weren't for Han Solo having a death wish. The Canon Luke Hypothesis is the most popular of the two, with the Hamill Hypothesis a close second.
