I just think that a video game supervillain, an YouTube comic book critic and Joss Whedon being the only feminists TV Tropes could name (at the time - I haven't been on TV Tropes in ages to check if they've changed it) is very funny.

Buffy the Vampire, and Doctor Who used to be on basically every page. (Not to mention some weird gross fetish X-Men rip-off welcomic.)

I feel like it's important to note that TVTropes actually started off solely focusing on BTVS, which is why it's so prominent everywhere. They've worked to tone it down a bunch, but you still see Buffy popping up as examples.

Honestly TVTropes is legitimately handy. I wouldn't call it an academic source, obviously, but if I see a plot element and go "hmm I like this," I can just look it up on there and get a huge list of everything else that's ever used that plot element, from well-known to deeply obscure. That's not an entirely bad way to find recs, and I've checked out a LOT of stuff because of TVTropes.

Yeah, it's good for finding things if you like X or Y (You like shows with heroes that have evil alter egos? Here's a list of stuff), but it's terrible as a creative resource as it long tried to bill itself as.

I like it for recapping or remembering things about a TV series or movie. The trivia pages can have some fun facts I don't already know, too.

Eh, I wouldn't even necessarily say it's bad as a creative resource, because being able to see a whole shitload of examples of a plot element is, again, really handy if you're planning on using that plot element and want do's and dont's.

e: like, for as much poo poo as they've gotten for the pages about sexual violence in fiction, those pages are basically a list of ways you shouldn't handle that topic and are pretty blunt on the matter, for example.

I think changes on Wikipedia are actually what helped TV Tropes to become a lot more popular - what I've heard is that, basically, Wikipedia changed its policies so you couldn't have ultra-detailed pages for every single filler episode of Naruto or every single Kingdom Hearts character, so lots of Wikipedia editors who were only interested in that all went over to TV Tropes, which at the time was a Joss Whedon fansite which needed more people who would provide content.

One of the low-key oddest things I remember from TV Tropes was how every single member of this Japanese rock band had their own individual page, even the ones who didn't have solo careers outside the band. I don't really know what the point of that was.

Into the Spiderverse shares a lot of production staff who made The Emoji Movie. It brings to mind that even terrible films have a lot of craft put into them like the CGI, costuming, acting, make-up, animation, set-design etc. It's just that this effort goes unappreciated when the premise, script or subsequent execution proceed to sink the film. If Lord and Miller can make a dime out of a two-hour toy-commercial, a comedy based on a tv-show nobody remembers, and an animated apology for the last three Sony Spider-Man movies, then god knows another creative-lead with enough executive-clout and skill could have made the Emoji Movie into a 3/5 masterpiece. Worked for Jumanji 2.

Because people like the Japanese rock band. 'There Is No Such Thing As Notability' is/was a rule there, as bad as that gets when you get people filling up the fan fiction tab. People are interested in it, so they make articles about it.

The thing that always killed me about TvTropes was the need to list things that didn't fit the category.

Category: heroes with evil alter-egos

Anime Examples:
Shiny Happy Fight Girls - Subverted! The protagonist thinks this is the case, but the antagonist was just messing with her perceptions
Surf Surf Australia - Fight-chan got mad and yelled at his girlfriend, but later they apologized and reconciled.

There's definitely a lot of issues where people clearly want to put the show they like on the page but don't have an actual example in mind so they just shoehorn whatever fits. I mean, it fits if the work is clearly evoking the trope, but yeah.

I think it's actually gotten a fair bit better over the years, which admittedly isn't saying much. There was a change of management recently. They definitely need to decide on a coherent direction and standardised formatting for the place and trim so much goddamn fat.

I looked up Lord and Miller on a whim because I didn't realize they were involved in Spider-Verse, and Wiki says their next movie as directors is Artemis, which is some of the best news I've heard this year. I thought the Martian was a rather weak Ridley Scott film, basically phoning it in on a popular book, but given Lord and Miller's track record I can say that I'm really, really excited to see what they do with some hard sci-fi moon base shenanigans.

I dunno, all that fat is part of the reason I even bother with TVtropes, so cutting all that out would be like tumblr getting rid of porn. Who are we, really, to decide the word count limit on Power Ranger's episode descriptions?

Considering Artemis was the weaker of the 2 books (Still p good tho) it'll be funny if it ends up the better of the 2 movies.
