I would agree ultimately that that crab's thematic role in the plot isn't clearly elucidated. I suspect when we learn more, he probably had a more expanded role when the story was more about Maui. At this point he's mainly there so that Moana can do a cool thing that earns Maui's respect.

I might write some kind of screed about how the only interesting thing in Titan AE is that the story revolves around the necessity of genocide to create lebensraum for the human race, with the main enemy having attacked mankind precisely to pre-empt this in an act of self-defense. But then I might turn into SMG and that would be bad.

Enh, just imagine the thing I said but 10x as long with some snooty references. The thing I don't really get is why the non-human characters are even in the film. Like, why are they interested in reviving humanity? Are they just a bunch of weebs?

Spatula City posted:by that token, one could ask why humans have any investment in bringing back animal species from the brink of extinction. Generally this doesn't involve murder and terrorism and eventually genocide. So basically the crew is PETA? But ignoring the realism question, why have so many aliens? If the plot is basically about the future of humanity, why are there only three humans in it and why does it not explore the relationship of humans to the rest of the galaxy at all? Anyway probably the main reason I hate the film was that we were choosing between watching this and The Iron Giant. Fangz fucked around with this message at 19:53 on Feb 26, 2017 |

Das Boo posted:Nah, not just complaining about it now. It's an annual thing and I was outright livid about The Tale of Princess Kaguya a couple of years back. (Or what was it? "Obscure Chinese poo poo?") But it does bother me that if you swapped titles and had Disney's The Red Turtle and and Ghibli's Zootopia, Disney still would've won. It was just a cherry on top they could choose the status quo while also making a political statement. But the brand name is WAY more important here. 'Chinese Cartoon' was used to refer to Song of the Sea. Anyway I think that's a plausible hypothetical, but I still think Zootopia is the better film. And Ghibli is overrated. EDIT: VVV Oh right, maybe. I think it was more amusing for SotS though. Fangz fucked around with this message at 19:22 on Feb 27, 2017 |

Also I feel like if Disney only could put in one nomination it'd be Finding Dory, or Sing, or even Sausage Party that gets nominated instead of anything else. And Zootopia's victory would become more likely, not less.

Pick posted:Yeah, I was mad Kaguya didn't win because I thought it was the best animated film that year. I don't feel the same way about Frozen winning over The Wind Rises, because though I enjoyed The Wind Rises I don't think it's particularly great. Looking back to 2014, I wasn't very enthused about either of those films. What's maddening was that the Lego Movie wasn't even nominated. Instead there's Despicable Me 2 and the Croods.

I would identify the underlying cause differently. The underlying cause is that the best animated feature is essentially a combination of the Best Picture oscar and the Best Foreign Language Film oscar, jammed into a single category. On the one hand you have the major US cinema releases, which Disney/Pixar rightfully dominate because typically the competition just sucks. Then on the other hand you get a smattering of random films with much more limited releases that they put in to encourage people to see. (Stuff like Kubo and Song of the Sea, while in english, had releases relatively small enough that they might as well be counted there) The Oscars is kinda a microcosm of the cinema industry in the US.

In nuBatB's defence, maybe what they are going for is to give Beast more of a clear character arc, to have him be more of an arsehole at the start. We don't necessarily know enough of how that scene actually turns out.

To be fair I've still not seen Your Name, because at this point I've basically seen all of Shinkai's movies and been disappointed by them every loving time. I don't fault other people for liking his films but he just doesn't remotely deliver the stuff I want out of a story (thematic coherence, relationships deeper than 'here's a girl and a guy and they are protagonists so they wuv each other', twists that aren't just scifi set dressing, characters that exhibit any sort of growth...), so Pick's critique sounds a lot like my problems with his other stuff. I really do think you'd like A Silent Voice, Pick, assuming you liked what I liked out of When Marnie Was Here. quote:- Ghost in the Shell good taste
