While we're talking anime, I rewatched Colorful and Christ that movie kills me. I feel like I should double feature it with It's a Wonderful Life, but I imagine that would leave me a desiccated husk.

Miss Hokusai is coming out on blu-ray soon. Did anyone happen to catch it? Colorful was probably one of my favorite movies, but I imagine a lot of that was how close to home it hit.

Sinners Sandwich posted:Miss Hokusai was really great, chill movie. Check it out. I really liked Miss Hokusai, but note that the movie is basically just a series of vignettes. Great if you love slice of life type stuff, doubly so if you enjoy it in feudal Japan. Doesn't quite match up to Colorful, the director's previous effort, but very few movies probably can. Watch Colorful.

teagone posted:What's with the Your Name hate the past couple pages Maybe if you're super sensitive to melodrama, I could see how it might be grating. I thought it was a cute story with a nice emotional core though If you're going to watch a Shinkai film, Your Name is definitely his best effort and it wasn't as "cringy" (I guess?) as his other films. Hey man, I like Your Name and Shinkai too. High five?

I don't recall hearing about either of these movies here, but Filmspotting pointed me towards them so I will share them with the thread because these seem like cool and good movies. Mary and the Witch's Flower, which is based on what remains of Studio Ghibli if the style didn't make that immediately obvious. Given how good When Marnie Was There was, I'm optimistic that these talented individuals can make a good movie without Miyazaki or Takahata: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqUKano2Hm4 The Breadwinner, which is from the studio that brought us The Book of Kells and Song of the Sea. It takes us from fantastical Ireland to, uh, Taliban controlled Afghanistan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqC0CtCzav8

Don't tell me you don't have random poo poo in your car trunk just in case you need it. But I guess it just reminds me of road trips I took with my family back in a my youth. I also really like Edward Ruscha's Standard Station painting and the New Topographics so maybe I just like the aesthetic of things in the middle of nowhere.

Can someone with more technical knowledge than me explain why CGI anime has weird looking movement? It's almost like characters are moving both too smoothly and too stiffly. Is it analagous to like, 24 vs 48 fps in film? Is it a matter of the craft not matching the technology?
