Hot take: the fact that we are discussing left lane driving instead of the fact that Seattle police brutally murdered a black mother might be the purest form of PNW white privelege.

Everyone seems to be talking about that new study on Seattle's minimum wage law, aka it reduced worker hours to the point where workers are making less now: https://qz.com/1014759/seattles-minimum-wage-increase-made-the-most-vulnerable-workers-poorer/ I'm guessing it's going to take more time to see it normalize, but automation will probably consume us by then.

I'm probably never going to have kids in my life, but for those who do, it's to my benefit that they raise good children so they don't grow up to be little loving assholes that ruin everyone's day. So if parental leave helps with that, sign me up. It's the same as funding schooling, etc.

Mountlake Terrace is still at least an hour drive away to downtown Seattle in rush hour traffic. Taking a bus isn't much better since the carpool lane ends at Northgate.

My preferences for mayor are: Oliver, Moon, McGinn, Hasegawa, Farrell and Durkin. I know Hasegawa is smart, but I watched a bit of the debate and he came across as uniformed and unprepared. Oliver's performance more or less solidified my opinion of her, and Moon came across as a policy wonk, which is fine. I don't want Durkin to win, especially now that she's picking up Ed Murray's donors.

The Oldest Man posted:You put Farrell after Hasegawa? Yikes. I feel mostly the same on the last 3 candidates. I would say there's a pretty big drop off after McGinn though. Like, I would be fine with Oliver, Moon, or McGinn winning, much less so than anyone else.

Jenny Durkan is cruising to win the primary Cary Moon is in 2nd, and Oliver is in a close 3rd. Late ballots could tip in Oliver's favor. Not sure if Moon or Oliver has the firepower to beat Durkan.

Yeah Durkan is only covering about 30% of the votes. If Moon gets Oliver's, Farrell's and McGinn's votes, she's in good shape. Also, Durkan got endorsed by Murray, which hasn't really played itself out yet.

Seattle City Council passed a bill 8-0 (Sawant was absent) that bans landlords from discriminating against people with a criminal record (except sex offenders, but they have to prove a legitimate reason why they discriminate against them). Nice.

w/r/t bikini baristas, I'm along the lines that as long as the woman isn't coerced into the job, and has reasonable security, by all means. If a dude wants to pay $6 for a lovely americano so he can see a little cleveage, sure. When they basically operate as prostitution rings, then yeah that's a problem, then kind of becomes a discussion of how you feel about sex work, but as far as I can tell, these coffee stands aren't fronts for sex trafficking. Those sketchy rear end massage parlors on Highway 99 in Everett on the other hand...

ElCondemn posted:In their own account they ordered him to get on the ground and then they shot him when he followed their orders, all because they said they thought he had a holster on his hip. Again cops get away with murder because they don't have to prove anything other than they were afraid of being killed by the guy on the ground who they were pointing guns at. Washington state probably has the worst laws when it comes to cop killings. You have to prove the cop had "murderous intent" in order for him to be guilty. If there's anything that can be interpreted as a threat to the cop, they basically have a permission slip to kill them.

I haven't seen any indication that Amazon wants to leave Seattle. From what it looks like, Amazon realizes they've hit max capacity here and wants to expand elsewhere. Which I think is fine because Amazon's growth has severely hosed the area up, and anymore was unsustainable.

Yeah, Seattle's economy heavily relies on them now, but they sure as gently caress contributed to ruining the housing market, as well as gentrification of Cap Hill. Seattle has Starbucks, Boeing, Amazon, Nordstrom, and Microsoft, plus all the software companies hanging out in Bellevue. If one of them left, short term it would hurt but I imagine another company would swoop in on the potential talent eventually. And maybe houses would be affordable in the short term

I don't watch a lot of TV but my girlfriend does. She said Durkan ran a ton of attack ads on Moon that got kind of nasty. Moon could have easily done that, but I guess chalk that up to lack of experience, lack of funds or trying to be above attack ads. Oh well. Cary Moon got what she wanted, though. Everyone in Seattle knows who she is now.
