I used to work as a field tech in the photofinishing industry and one of our biggest clients was Walgreens.

Used to be that I had some kind of upper respiratory infection on and off from November through March or April because I'd inevitably pick something up from all of the sick people going in an out of the stores. No amount of vitamin C or hand washing ever seemed to help either.

So looks like my long insurance nightmare is finally coming to a close.

For those of you just joining the party, I was rear-ended in my wife's car at the beginning of last month and the at-fault party's insurance has fought me every step of the way. Most recently, when they came out to appraise the car they assumed that since the LCD display panel for the stereo and HVAC had been removed (I was having a friend of a friend fix defective solder on the display itself) that the car didn't have a stereo equipped at all.

I brought this up with the appraiser on the 23rd and he assured me it would be fixed. Got the final paperwork late last week, vehicle valuation was still based on the car not having a stereo when it actually had the Bose premium package. After a bunch of back and forth I was finally able to get them to quote the car with all of its options and wouldn't you know - a car with premium audio is worth ~$500 more than a car with no stereo at all. At one point they were trying to claim the car was only worth $3500 because that's what the only example they could find locally on Autotrader was selling for, but refused to tell me what year, options or mileage that example had.

At this point I'm not certain how this company (Erie Insurance) is still in business.

I could have filed the claim through my insurer but then it'd be questionable if I'd ever get my deductible back.

I'd rather not tie up $500 for months, assuming I ever saw it again.

e: I don't draw much of a distinction between "my" insurer and "their" insurer. They're both two sides of the same coin, and my insurance company won't hesitate to gently caress me over if it helps their bottom line either.

Re: different oil at Walmart, there is a possibility this is true. It's been well documented that as a result of Walmart dictating prices to suppliers (with a "do it or we'll find someone who will" threat attached) many of their suppliers have Walmart specific products that are either made to a lower spec reflecting the price, or in the case of big ticket items like TVs they'll deliberately ship sub-par products, like units with B-grade LCD panels installed.

There isn't any database of known products like this (that I'm aware of) but it's certainly possible that the formulation of a given motor oil sold at Walmart is different - and if so, likely in a "for the worse" manner - from what you'd buy from a dealership, parts store or really any other retailer that isn't big enough to tell its suppliers what it will pay for a given product.

Not saying if the above is true that the oil is going to grenade your engine, but it's certainly possible that the oil they sell is different.

You would think this would be the case, but a friend of mine stumbled across the Walmart specific products thing completely by accident several years ago. He bought two bags of the same socks - one at Walmart, the other at a department store like Dillard's or Macy's and everything was identical between the two - UPC/SKU, product number on the bag, packaging was identical but the socks from Walmart were obviously more cheaply made than the ones from the department store.

Granted this is anecdotal evidence, and things may have changed in the time that has passed but I would assume Walmart wouldn't want any obvious indication that the products they sell are any different from what gets sold at competitors.

TL;DR Rubbermaid announced to its retail customers in the late 90s that since their raw material cost had increased so would the prices of their products. Walmart responded by saying they would either have to sell at a loss or not sell at all, resulting in Rubbermaid shuttering a large factory in Ohio, laying off roughly 1,000 workers and moving production to China.

Window down, license and proof of insurance, sign the ticket, ask if I'm free to go. That's it. No small talk and no talking about what they saw or allege I did.

I'm a big proponent of the idea that if you want respect you have to show it first, and pretty much every interaction I've had with law enforcement they've shown me nothing but contempt and/or acted like I was a second-class citizen compared with them.

* - 1) two cops pulled out of a parking lot right in front of me requiring a crash stop to avoid t-boning them, pulled me over, reamed me out for the better part of a half hour and threatened to shoot me on sight if they ever encountered me again. Which has done wonders for my anxiety when I see blue & red lights in my rear mirros. Oh - and their department stonewalled my complaint until the dashcam footage was rolled over, then closed the investigation due to "lack of evidence."
2) routine stop after some old-timer changed lanes right in front of me doing at least 15 under the limit, officer said I was "following too closely" which I countered with "he cut me off." Cop got super pissed and threatened to arrest me on fabricated charges because I told him what I was going to do before I did it - ie, "My wallet is in a side pocket of my pants, I am going to reach for it with my right hand - is that OK?"

For those that don't know, to replace a hard drive in any of Apple's iMacs since 2012, you have to use a tool to separate double-sided tape, and remove the display.

Honestly my biggest gripe with Apple is their insistence on only allowing their OS to run on their hardware. If I could (legally) load MacOS on a system I built most of my complaints with Apple would go away. But instead I'd have to buy an overpriced computer that (as demonstrated above) is a major pain in the rear end to replace or upgrade components, and aside from the aesthetically pleasing case is little different from PC offerings, since Apple switched to an x86 platform.

HID bulbs slowly shift color temperature over their lifespan, then right before failure it ramps up considerably and you'll have one bulb change to some off the wall color (like pink/purple.)

As long as both bulbs appear to be the same color you're fine.

As far as generics go...I bought a pair of generic D2S bulbs about 10 years ago (when brand name bulbs were in the hundreds of dollars range) and they're still working fine today. YMMV but if they fail you're only out $15.
