I'm recounting the dumb poo poo that I did in that time and good lord man.

1) Left a bar in North Chicago wandering back with someone else and a very nice police officer escorted us back to base without consequence.
2) Got on the wrong train out of TSC and ended up Kenosha with a GM buddy of mine. With no plan, walked into a dive bar, endeared ourself to the local populace and never paid for a drink again.
3) Didn't realize last call in Chicago was 4AM.
4) Carried a dude twice my size back from a Super Bowl Party at a Steelers (Seahawks) bar in Wrigleyville. Poured him into the cab, talked my way through the gate guard.

There are another 10 things easily. I finished all of the CBT stuff 2 months early, had second pick of orders and then first pick out of C-School.

My second Good Conduct Award is one of my cherished possessions.

I think that MBAs are useful, in case you are looking for an answer to the question of "Is lightpole a total fucking idiot".
For the Gaza port, the Army's 7th Transportation Brigade will send 2 LSVs and 3 LCUs, which will take 30 days to get there, with a MARAD LMSR to do all the really heavy lifting.

A lot of this is really dumb since they've been trying to get rid of their vessels and this capability, and the expeditionary support docks are laid up due to phase down with that initiative.

Navy Fires Commander of USS Ohio -- 3rd Submarine Skipper Relieved in 7 Months

The Navy fired the commander of one of its guided missile submarines on Monday -- the third submarine firing in the last seven months -- according to a press release on Wednesday.

The commanding officer of the USS Ohio sub's gold crew -- Capt. Kurt Balagna -- was relieved by Rear Adm. Nicholas Tilbrook, the commander of Submarine Group 9, "due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command," the Navy said.

Balagna appears to be the third Navy commander relieved this year. However, since last September, Navy leaders have fired the skippers of the USS Georgia and USS Alabama as well. Navy officials have previously said that in 2023, the service relieved 15 commanding officers.

A Navy official told Military.com that the relief was "related to conduct rather than performance"

On a submarine it's definitely loving a member of the crew. That kind of power disparity playing out on intensely isolated deployments would be a real problem. Its also such a facially stupid move that my bet is on DUI for why they were relieved

I've become the victim of a master-level troll. The classic "left my NIPR account unattended" e-mail, but with a genius twist. The recipient of the email is a GM1 that was on the Champlain with me for a deployment and decommissioning.

Here's the email:

quote:

[GM1's First Name],

Just wanted to reach out and let you know how much our friendship means to me. You and I coming from the same command and being together again gives me that brotherhood I have always wanted. This motivates me to perform sooooooo much more. I don’t mean to be weird, I just want to let you know you have a special place in my heart.

Yours and always.

He only found out it was a prank email when he told me how much it made his day, and I had no idea wtf he was talking about. Incredible troll.

All that stuff is true, too. Except for me performing more. I think that was the only thing that gave him pause.

Hah. The most wholesome prank email.

Best one I've seen was back when you could email NMCI helpdesk to change your GAL title. One guy was listed as "Command Morale Officer" for a few weeks before he noticed.

This will likely help him make E-6, but not after that as awards are typically looked at for that particular cycle. Not as an overall for your whole career.

I think the chief’s board is going to notice that a sailor got a comm as an E5 even if awards don’t count for points on the test. Every board that looks at them is going to recognize it.

You're doing this all wrong crab dad. You rise to master chief on the wings of the blue falcon. You should've put yourself in for a bronze star w valor and just told the guy you routed his paperwork and it's held up somewhere in the chain. That's the kind of moxie senior leadership knows and respects.

How do you know that’s not my next step?
J/K however I am forwarding the original letter and outcome to my chain of command now. I was terrified that the sailor might not be recognized and I would be and I would have felt like a heel. But now that he got the best result possible I’ll look to myself now.

Yeah he awarded roughly 40 NAM’s to the crew and today he is handing over the ship to his replacement.
The crew seemed to really like him. See what happens with the new CO.

Also the mahu story is used as an example for me telling younger sailors to never trust other sailors with information you can just google first.

Sometimes maybe you'd want to put a good CO into a yard to try to save morale during a normally decimating period of a ships crew turnover cycle?

I mean, yeah you would, but I think it's generally the mark of death for an officer's career. I could be wrong on that, I never payed much attention to the O games.

That's good, because his interim predecessor, straight up blamed the crew for the collision which is loving bullshit.

"Sometimes bad things happen to good boats, that's not the case here"

Is not something you need to say to a traumatized crew, after the individuals responsible for the incident have already been removed. Still makes my loving blood boil.

Yes, as an officer, if you are Detached For Cause that is the death of your career. Even if it's overturned, you then have to go through the effort of getting the paperwork removed from your record.

The Navy's removed several COs in the last few months. I just saw that a SEAL CO was relieved, a Commodore was relieved a few months back, then you had the Cruiser CO. That's just three off the top of my head. Never mind the Submarine COs we've been discussing in the tread.

Nah re-up bonuses just give a number for how much extra you're earning vs. how much extra you work. We did the math a couple times while getting underway and realized that we were making less than a dollar extra per hour worked due to how much extra poo poo nukes have to do compared to conventional sailors. IIRC this assumed that as a sailor, you would participate in at least 1 mmp or drydocking period and was based on the experience of a submariner.

But seriously, I could not have gotten through power school as a young, alcoholic dipshit so I have some respect for all you science hippies that did.

That said, it did suck to hear repeatedly how much dumber us coners were. I did feel bad watching you guys hook up shore power while we were going on liberty. So being dumb has it's advantages.

One of my best friends on Augusta was a nuke that had the worst military bearing I've ever seen. He was a great guy. He used to write poo poo on the TP rolls in middle level head, all negative about nukes, but full of misspellings. It was hilarious.

This could have been avoided if the admirals asked them what their weekend liberty plan was!
