I am no sailor but wouldn't it make more sense to use the reservists in their rates in order to free up others to do lovely things like be mess cranks or whatever ? That way you cover down on what needs to be done and don't piss off the guys loaning you free labor?

Google's Project Fi would be the easiest way to have overseas coverage almost anywhere in the world. Otherwise you can try taking an unlocked phone and trying to do prepaid with one of the big 3 cell providers but Japan has archaic requirements for cell phone registration and you might run into trouble not having Japanese bank account if you try somewhere in town not directly next to a us mil base.

Three years on a ship with the Navy has taught me that they mostly work them until they break a bunch and then have a safety stand down and talk a sweet game about work/life balance and how everyone cares about their mental well being. That usually lasts a couple of weeks or until the next inspection is coming up and they repeat the process.

Not really sure which way you are going here. Are you trying to say watch standers get more sleep because of their need to be ready for watch? Or are you trying to say standing watch exasperates the lovely sleeping schedules on ship?

Realchat: Don't let the AD guys shelve you as a reservist. You were AD for 10 years, let them know you know stuff about stuff and can actually do things. Absolutely be proactive on your AT, and you'll get things accomplished and feel worthwhile.

If that doesn't happen, then good news: you never have to go back there, and you can publicly shame them without fear of repercussions. It's not like they're writing your evals.

Yeah our command is pretty vocal about utilizing reservists within their rates and doing something that helps both them and the ship. If the AT guys get hosed with, all they have to do is tell their command and we stop getting guys.

I mean I am no sailor so half of what you guys talk about is greek to me but I sit in all the dumb meetings where idiots propose things like making AT guys mess cranks and stuff.

I spend lots of time at white beach and agree it's the shittiest navy base I've been to. When the MEU is doing their onload they have shuttles that go to Kadena. Not sure about other times though.

The northern part of the island is actually pretty cool. There are plenty of tropical beaches and places to get away from the mass of US Military. The problem is that if you've spent any time on a ship in the Pacific you've spent a bunch of time on tropical islands. Once you've seen one beach, they start to all look the same and the scenery doesn't offset the rest of the stupidity you are forced to endure while you are there.

I can't speak about army bases but as a marine who spent three years on an amphib, I can tell you that US Navy quality of life is better in almost every way than USMC. The only areas where the average usmc junior enlisted warrior is better off is in their work load while on ship. That comes at the cost of almost everything they do being more dangerous and having higher injury and mortality rates than their navy counterparts.

I've been with nine different units in my career and my time on ship was one of the best times I've had in the military. That includes the months spent turning squares off the coast of Okinawa.

It's the same way when Marines live in Navy housing. USMC regs give a married E-6 a 3 bedroom house on base. Navy regs on Sasebo say an E-6 rates 2 bedrooms unless they have more than one kid. Same thing for a CWO2. Marines would give him 3 bedrooms but on Sasebo my old CCO had to prove he was Gunny before he got his commission in order to get the better housing.

Also if Blue Ridge puts reservists to work like we did, you will be freeing someone up to get snagged for poo poo work while you do in rate stuff. That way the reserves stay happy and keep sending folks out and the ship has another person to do things no one else wants to.
