If anyone is interested, Georgia Tech is doing an online masters of science in computer science. it's the same degree as the normal ms in cs, but it's only like $1000 a semester. Im in my second semester if anyone has questions about it.

Is your undergrad in CS too? I'm not a veteran, but I was thinking of doing that Mas and my background is not CD. How do you like it?

my undergrad is in art actually. I got a masters in technology studies from Eastern Michigan, but wanted a real CS degree.

So far I really like the classes. They aren't easy, but you can learn a ton from them, and it's really affordable. if you go the Montgomery GI bill option you end up pocketing money back.

Yea, I'm still enlisted until july, then I start my real job. The program is specifically targeted towards industry professionals who want to get a masters degree, but can't stop their careers to do it.

Hardcopy textbooks are pointless and offer little benifit compared to digital versions. Though in the future we'll probably just licence the texts via a proprietary service.

I stand by my opinion that online classes are superior to lecture classes. Especially for tech classes, it owns being able to just pause a video and take a nap.

Don't be silly. if they wanted to they'd already have all your poo poo hacked.

same.

yesterday I decided I wanted to host my own gitlab server. Right when I was about to clone the repo an admin accidentally deleted the entire gitlab production database and their backups failed. When it finally came back up what I thought would be a simple configuration turned out to be hell. Database permission problems, ruby precompiler issuses. But I finally got the thing up and running. But still issues with the unicorn web manager crashing from memory errors, spotty page timeouts, and straight up not being able to clone repos which was the entire point of the project.

So I tossed the whole thing, installed gogs and it worked in less than 5 minutes.

pro tip: gogs good

This. Basic math is fine. I'll even fanagle my way around excel formulas. Everything else is stupid because I don't understand it. I don't want to understand it either. I'll leave that poo poo for people that can do math. I need flexibility and don't abide well by solid rules mathematics typically applies.

The secret to math is that a computer already does it better. Doing math without a computer is like trying to write a novel on stone tablets.

It's fine. Once automation takes all the jobs we'll be forced to implement basic income anyways.

I mean yeah for normal day to day internal stuff, but if you ever do anything customer-facing (sales, consulting, or management) expect to be throwing on a sport coat over those jeans at a minimum, if not a casual suit with no tie.

I never got the IT nerd resistance to dressing up when appropriate. Spend money to buy well fitting clothing and it's just as comfortable as jeans.

We're mostly socially retarded, but more so silicon valley kind of dictates the dress code these days. It's shorts, hoodies, and bringing your dog to work. When I talked with Amazon one of thier requirements was having a cool dog to bring with you to work.

I go to a small school with a tiny faculty.

One of our professors‘s mom was having health issues, so our professor was going out of town and missing a bunch of classes. Her mom died this last weekend and she’s going to have to miss MORE classes.

She is leading a small independent study group that I am a part of. It’s categorized as an internship for three credits.

We have been lost in the sauce for the last few weeks and now we don’t know what we are supposed to do. We have benchmarks that are supposed to be met but like I said, we aren’t sure what we are supposed to be doing.

I don’t want to gently caress this up because I feel like I could use this as an opportunity to get a letter of recommendation from a CFO, which could carry a LOT of influence for me going forward. But at the same time I want to be sensitive to the professor since her mom dying is a real issue.

I’m kind of just venting. But I’m also wondering if anyone has ever run into a situation like this and what they did about it? On one hand I feel like complaining is selfish but at the same time I have a lot of stake in this internship.

I think inaction is worse than no action. I don't really know the details, but if you act on your own and gently caress things up really bad it'd probably be the same as doing nothing.
