You know, those cutouts look like they'd be pretty hard to get. Especially considering they'd be on newsprint paper.

Those kinds of newspaper-comic paper dolls were still around when I was a kid. You were supposed to glue the whole panel to thin cardboard (like the side of a cereal box), then cut the pieces out.

That's literally it, yes. No other particular lasting reason has been given. Besides being vaguely "mean."

I said this a bunch of threads ago (and I'm embarrassed that I even remember it) - but a whole bunch of years ago, Tiffany was actually written as a high school mean girl. She was shown as doing things like taking pictures of Luann in the locker room and posting them online; cheating and lying about her own accomplishments and those of others; bullying and belittling people she thought were competition; and other standard mean girl stuff.

The fact that she hasn't been shown to do anything like that whatsoever since then, doesn't seem to have percolated into the author's brain. He's still punishing her for the stuff he wrote way long ago, and expecting readers to understand it.

Bleah.

Ali's House, by Marguerite Dabaie and Tom Hart

"The main difference between an average American family and an Arab-American family may simply be the food and music. Ali's house is filled with the smells of mamoul (date cookies), mujadrah (lentil and rice stew), and the sound of music coming from Ali's various ouds, nays, and darboukas. From Ali's love for his falafel stand situated in a suburban mall, to his niece Maisa's struggle to be accepted by her peers on her first day in an American school, the family's everyday situations surrounding kinship, pop culture and work are what you will find when you peer into the windows of Ali's New Jersey home."

Confession time: When I was 8 I did this to my babysitter after reading the comic.

Kids don't change. I babysat a group of hellions that did this to me over a decade before Watterson started writing C&H. Another pair of little jerks locked themselves in their parents' bedroom and took the extension phone off the hook so that I couldn't call for help.

Of course there were a lot of kids who were no problem and actually nice to sit for, but the point is, some kids just don't have impulse control or any idea what the results of their behavior could be; they just think pranking the babysitter is funny. In that regard I think C&H hits the mark pretty well.

I think that the writer expects us to remember a strip a long time ago where Gwen basically friendzones Skip and shuts him down with an "I don't date people at work." Wouldn't be the first/only writer to expect audiences to have that much recall (I'm looking at you, Evans and Batiuk)

I wonder if it is ever a reasonable expectation.

(As to why I do remember that strip, I have no idea, but I remember backstories for FW, LuAnn and JP and others too, so I'm not showing favorites here.)

Yeah, it is weird. It's a stitched-together quote from Barry Longyear's "Science Fiction Writer's Workshop - I: An Introduction to Fiction Mechanics." Except Longyear says "...like some kind of great puzzle." (Not "colorful tapestry.")
