It was also a lot more interesting and meant more, character-wise. Goku found an opponent he couldn't beat, Beerus had more character than another bad guy, and it looked a lot better.

Whis freaking out over food is great, though.

Spoilers! Rei was raised by the lady in charge of the ghoul fight pit from earlier, where he was forced to kill people to get by. Ghoul Lady also made him a castrati. He was rescued on a sting op, and raised by the CCG.

Nope. This all happens in the manga. But I imagine after this whole scene they are going into filler, because they're only about 3-4 books from the current run.

Ok, wow. Ok, since I like reading Trash Manga, I'll just say that the show hosed up the Rescue Arc. It also really hosed up the Owl's design. And with this rear end-pull, we skip out on about two books of Kaneki actaully changing as a character, getting beat up by a ghoul with kung-fu (just Kung-Fu!) and the reveal of the Owl's actual identity (spoiler, it's The dude in charge of the Cafe, but the original was his son )

So, yeah, they kinda just rear end-pulled this.

His reveal in the book is when the CCG is like 'Chase after those guys who escaped', and he's just standing there in the mist. He then takes down two of those guys in that dumb armor to stop them, then peaces out. He's just there and gone. We don't see him again for another three books. He's used sparingly in the manga because he's supposed to be an urban legend that people think the older inspectors made up to sound badass. I take it the show is not going to go that route.
