Put my game resolutions over in the other thread. Real-life resolutions I'm still working out. However, my unposted video game budget I imposed on myself also turned out to be a success (no more than $30 or one full-priced game a month, ignoring charity sales like Humble Bundle), so I'm probably going to aim at having a food budget this year.

I've been running a Breakfast Cult game for three months now (nuts to its one-shot nature) and just finished the second big mystery scenario, involving Fong Ho's untragic death on the Daedalus space station field trip, which they solved (Gai did it, but he's not responsible), and we're probably going to have some cooldown with some local small-m Occultar mysteries before moving into the third and final scenario. Also, it turns out trying to maintain Fong Ho's mind as a proto-Cold One falls under "most terrible decisions players can make that I never would have predicted".

Also been doing some playtesting for Level99, which I can't talk about, other than I've been doing it? Pretty easy to get into if you're interested.

Going to MAGfest this upcoming week, so video games! Looks like it's going to have a less impressive guest list this year, I don't know why they decided to hold it on the first week of the year, speaking of terrible decisions convention organizers can make I never would have predicted...

The funny thing about BESM d20 is that they seemed perfectly aware of some of the balance issues in core d20... and then go on to create all-new balance issues in their own systems.

It's an example of swerving to avoid an oncoming car and driving right off the cliff instead.

I will say, tri-stat BESM did do one thing that was different and showed a bit more thought than most "universal" systems as to how genre affects the values of a character's abilities (well, skills only if I recall correctly) and realized that if you're doing a romantic comedy set in not-Hogwarts then social and magical skills are going to be more valuable than being good at shooting someone in the face.

Yeah, skills only. And the core issue with that is that it encouraged you to create characters counter to whatever genre you were playing, because you could buy up nongenre skills and relied on the GM not letting your character solve everything with stealth and gunplay in your high school romance anime.

Then again you could accidentally make Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu that way, so YMMV.

And yet Mecha & Manga was awful.

Ultimately Mutants & Masterminds presumes a different sort of narrative flow and doesn't really handle constant power increases well, so I wouldn't use it for battle manga without some real clawhammering. It'd be fine for a manga with plot archetypes similar to American superhero comics, mind. It'd probably be fine for something like tokusatsu superheroes... with slight clawhammering.

Of course, then you get into the argument with the issues of superhero systems trying to simulate everything from Incredible Hulk to Young Heroes in Love... but that's another mess to dig through.

Fantasy Craft's NPC generation system is a lot easier if you use the Web NPC Builder. In any case, it neatly avoids having the trap of building monsters as psuedo-PCs like mainstream d20 does, which was always more of a headache on my experience.

I'm always surprised there hasn't been a definitive law enforcement or organized crime RPG. Maybe it's too close to reality, but they're such huge genres it feels bizarre to see them mostly untouched. Maybe they're just more fun to watch than portray.

Once I worked a bit on a d20 crime game based off of Spycraft, then I found out the Spycraft guys were already doing that so I stopped. And then Ten Thousand Bullets was released in 2007 and it turned out just great- what? It never came out? And now been it's a decade since its original release date?

Why put in the effort when you can sell haaaaaats.

When I decided I was leaving TF2, I decided to put my only unusual hat up for $200, thinking that it would never go for it but I should give it a shot. I originally had it valued by a goon trader for around $30-$50, which seemed accurate for the Steam history of that hat's sales. But I saw they occasionally went for upwards of that on the Steam history, so hey, worst case it doesn't sell and I have to drop the price.

It sold overnight.

Yeah, the new 7th Sea is generally very good. It definitely has some issues (the corruption mechanic is awful, and where it intersects with the sorcery, doubly so) and as a player I'm not sure you could ever convince me not to take Foul Weather Jack as an advantage (unless you just got rid of it), but it's a strong revision over the original version.

Nah, there are some, like how awesome Ireland Inismore is, a few comments lurking in the GM section (which is mostly fine, but it devolves a bit here and there into stuff like "poke out a hero's eyes to teach them a lesson!"), or... the Corruption rules, again.

But yeah, you can't really lay much of the original 7th Sea at Wick's feet. Though he was really influential on the line, after the core I think he only actually wrote on two or so books (Avalon and Pirate Nations, IIRC). Judging by the derision he's put on the ancient aliens subplot, I don't think it was actually his intent for the line. But it's hard to say.

It's true, things can be a lot worse, and whether or not we'll have a real crisis, it's hard to say at this point. But that doesn't make being disgusted with things invalid, even in perspective, and it's not like we live in the world where a disaster in a nation somehow magically stops at that nation's borders. I'm probably not going to face any of the true miseries faced by the Third World everyday, it's true. But if, say, America's economy hits another depression or our leadership publicly decides that a certain other country rolling tanks across a border is a-okay, that's not something that's just America's concern anymore.

In any case, just being cynical and shrugging probably won't help anyone going forward.

I think the key issue with dark elves isn't just their skin color alone and more just having a literally demonized matriarchy that - in its most mainstream version - also includes ritualized rape and your standard fantasy vilification of relatively tame sexual fetishes. Having them also be racially evil dark people is pretty much just the later of piss on a dung cake.

I don't see why you couldn't just have underground elves, if you have to, just make them a nuanced concept based around that. As for half-elves, my conclusion is that if you can have half-elves and half-orcs then... orcs and elves must just be different varieties of human, or extremely close relatives. But in general I think most fantasy races don't really justify being anything other some weird human offshoot. Of course, there was that Reign mini-setting that got well into fantasy genetics, but dwarves may as well just be "humans adapted to smaller underground spaces" for how different they actually are, in my mind.

Honestly it's not that unusual for RPGs to get what's achievable by humans really wrong in general; I'm reminded of the Steve Jackson Games writing guidelines which ask you to make sure you have a copy of Guinness Book of World Records on hand to reference what a normal person can or can't do. Of course, what's achievable by people with or without enhancement keeps growing and we'll probably continue to be surprised in the future.

Personally, I'm always bugged by Charisma stats - I'm not convinced that there's some nebulous "likability" that doesn't actually relate to one's social skills or appearance. It's fine enough as a summary of one's social skills in games that don't use skills, but if you have a Diplomacy or Persuasion skill, Charisma itself seems superfluous.

DOOM 2016 has a lot of minutae you can work on whether you're just trying to be a completist or snapmaps or whatever. Myself, I tried out Wolfenstein afterwards and it seems so clunky in comparison. Still fairly good, but it sure has some clunky checkpointing.

I've said it before but I have always found "short people" as a separate species as a weird quirk of fantasy gaming, much less having multiple species of short people.
