Finally caught up on genchat after being too busy to post for most of break. Last movie of 2016: Rogue One (Hate Ball is right, there are only two or three actual characters, everyone else is damp Wonderbread being pushed along) First movie of 2017: a rewatch of The Big Lebowski. Still loving great, it's so much fun that I always ignore how well-crafted and layered it is. Chapo Trap House rules still, and I'm excited for Boogey's new podcast episode.

What film presents y'all get for Christmas? My dad got my Better Call Saul season 2, my older sister got me The Godfather trilogy, and I bought myself bargain bin copies of The Wolf of Wall Street, It's a Wonderful Life, and motherfucking Dredd. My girlfriend, meanwhile got me a little Slowpoke plush that I'm totally bringing to work and setting next to my Hedorah and Freddy Krueger

Hat Thoughts posted:Yeah but the thing I was saying earlier is that what you're asking for exactly already exists exactly. I don't understand why it being unofficial/not available for "purchase" somehow makes it less valid when you can still get it super easy. It's just kind of loving insane that the only way to get an original, superior copy of one of the most important films in American cinematic history is to pirate it. The George Lucas edits are noticeably inferior to the original cut of a film that drastically changed American cinema, but the only way you can obtain the superior, original cut is through illegal means. To me, that's loving bonkers.

Grendels Dad posted:I don't know why people keep bringing up the dinosaur rear end when there is even worse poo poo happening in that scene. Like, at least the dinosaur moves kinda quickly, there is a robot leisurely crossing in front of the screen and obstructing the view right after dinosaur rear end. It's not even a good effect, it looks like someone filmed their TV showing Star Wars and then made their favorite toy walk past the screen. Because the dinosaur rear end covers the entire frame. It's mind-boggling that Lucas thought that was good blocking.

Season 4 of the Wire is real good, but I think I like season 2's laser focus on narrowing down both sides of a single crime thing, and how the criminal and legal elements build towards each other. I just finished episode 2 of season 5 and WHAT THE gently caress IS GOING ON WITH JIMMY, IS HE REALLY STAGING A HOMICIDE SCENE HOLY poo poo. I'm kinda disappointed there are only 8 episodes left, I'm really loving it.

If it was his first or second film I could give it a pass but the dude had already made Shivers, The Brood and was on the cusp of doing Videodrome when he shat it out. Scanners is the second-worst Cronenberg I've seen (Naked Lunch is #1), but even this post seems hyperbolic. It's flawed as hell, but it has enough going for it that it's still good. Love those practical effects and the ambiguity of what Scanners actually are and can do.

I'd remake Ghosts of Mars, because it's already a schlocky-but-fun remake of Assault on Precinct 13, but there are just a couple obvious tweaks you could make that could turn it from a dumb B movie into a legit great movie. I'd also remake Gremlins and set it in Silicon Valley. It'd be more focused on the anti-consumerist half of Gremlins that's about how the breakdown of technology affects our world, but instead of Christmas toys and such, it's about our society's focus on apps developed by absolute psychopaths that are sold to us as conveniences. The problem is that this idea already exists, and is real, and is Soylent constantly giving its customers food poisoning.

Also, the newest Chapo has more from Ben Shapiro's True Allegiance. Nothing quite as good as a kid being paid to get murdered by a cop, but still drat funny. The Chapo Reading Series is maybe the best serial entertainment currently being made.

Do you ever think about how one of your favorite works of art was also a favorite work of art by a killer? It's something that's wormed its way into my head after becoming obsessed with Eric Harris' favorite band, and thinking about how my second-favorite movie of all time was inspiration for the failed assassination of Reagan.
