I could only take Film Critic Hulk's gimmick for so long before ragequitting.

Really, I've been missing a good movie site to follow since The Dissolve died. I mostly just read AV Club and Vox because it's easy and the writing's comfortably middlebrow. but it's sort of like an ice cream sandwich made with the best cookies and the most delicious ice cream. It's still an ice cream sandwich.

I binge read a bunch of recent Armond White reviews recently, and say what you will about the man, but he's his own person, and that's kind of refreshing. A lot of critics make gestures at developing their own unique perspective, but in the end they get dragged back to normalcy because to do otherwise would make them unemployable. White is only employed because the National Review clearly enjoys how often White insults liberals. 'cause White is one of those communists that think liberals are the real enemy.

I've had days where I feel like that's true.

"An insufferable "cultural critic" and an aspiring screenwriter are stuck together in close quarters for hours" is a good premise. You could seriously just copy-paste some of the discussions here, and that would save a lot of work.

the climax of the plot is when the critic cites Zizek for the 18th time to explain why the writer's screenplay sucks, and the writer, patient up to this point, explodes, and says "gently caress ZIZEK!". not sure whether they kill each other at the end, or kiss. Either works.

PUNCH MAIDEN is a 30 year old magical girl from Newark, NJ. The quickest way I can describe her is if Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sarah Connor had a baby. She loves heavy metal, beer, the New York Football Giants and hitting things.

Here's a picture of her in costume -

And one that shows the details more clearly -

e: I haven't decided what part of Newark she lives in exactly, but she works and spends a lot of time around wherever pretentious hipsters might congregate (Ironbound?) She frequently encounters such as depicted here -

This is awesome and there's definitely some streamlining you could do with that costume, especially considering you'll have to draw it a lot for action scenes, probably. Also because streamlined designs are inherently more visually appealing, imo. but the concept is great. maybe her archnemesis could be an ironic racist supervillain?

I actually really like Justin Timberlake's acting. He was perfectly cast in The Social Network. He was pretty solid in Inside Llewyn Davis, and had a great meta supporting role in Popstar. It helps that Timberlake is just generally a charismatic performer. and that when he's cast in movies, it's not generally in a self-aggrandizing way. He works with the movie. you'd think having him in a movie would be distracting, but he's not as much of a glory hog as some much worse musician-turned-actors. He's okay being a supporting player.

e: I'll talk about movies when the nightmare is over.

I had an argument today with a coworker during lunch where I tried to explain to her that the Supreme Court had no jurisdiction in this matter because it was a "rule" rather than a "law". It's rough sometimes talking politics with well-intentioned liberals that don't really understand laws and government. we were able to agree that it was "a dick move", and that, if it was under Congress' purview (which I argued it COULD be), nothing would happen to stop Trump from excluding whatever outlets he didn't want.

on this subject, I think it's only a matter of time before the Trump administration is doing press only with sympathetic conservative outlets, and refuses to even talk to the media. Which, ironically, will make the leak problem worse.

the upside of all this is that it's going to be insanely hard, for the time being, for the Republicans to pass much. Trump's first 100 days are probably going to be among the least effectual ever for a new president. The destruction of Obamacare is fouled up because a number of the morons finally connected the dots between "Obamacare" and their medical coverage, and because some Republicans are naive enough to think their party could muster up any sort of replacement plan, AND because the House Freedom Caucus is asking for too much at once, and the current proposal ties in Planned Parenthood defunding, meaning Murkowski and Collins at least would vote no.

Republican voters wanted someone who didn't know how to do even the most basic aspects of presidenting, AND THEY GOT HIM.

The thing Dems fear most is a left tea party. Ed Rendell outright said as much, that mounting primary challenges to "centrist" incumbents even in safe districts was "too far to the left". Too far for what? It's not electoral viability - the republican tea party already proved "moderate" party loyalists will vote for anyone with the right letter by their name, no matter how unpleasant or ideologically heterodox. They already showed that their strategy works to move a party the way you want. And in fact, it's precisely the strategy Clinton and the DLC used to destroy the New Deal Democrats in the 80s and 90s. No wonder they're scared - they know it works cause they did it. They're afraid of reaping what they've sown.

They fear it, and their fear leads them to actions that further alienate the grassroots. Ellison wasn't THAT leftist, and if they wanted someone that would be a good compromise between the grassroots and the establishment, there was Buttigieg. But it's alarmingly clear that the establishment still has active contempt for the grassroots, and somehow, either thinks their best electoral path is appealing to mythical centrists, or would rather lose everything than see the Democratic Party budge one inch to the left. I'm terrified for the country not because the Republicans or Trump's people are so good at electioneering, but because the Democratic Party is broken in a fundamental way. They're irrelevant in Congress, and by choosing Perez (although granted that Perez himself is pretty liberal compared to DWS or Howard Dean), they signaled that they want the Sanders supporters to shut up and go away.

I randomly ended up watching this because it was mentioned glowingly in a Films of the 70s book, and I saw it on the shelf of the library. It's startlingly good. Just raw, cynical, angry, and it feels like it really captures what things were like. It's weird that it's billed as blaxploitation, when it's more a social realist crime film. either way, super good. and of course it spawned the song that was then used memorably in Jackie Brown.

I think maybe there's a lot of people who hate Muslims and immigrants far more than black people. Like, black people? They're AMERICANS. but dem dirty foreigners?! whatever else the Democrats did, they doubled down on supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants and defended Muslims in this country at every turn. It was the right thing to do, but it was easy for Trump to exploit that. Disliking diversity doesn't necessarily mean only racism towards black people.

It's also worth noting that Obama didn't really have to deal with whether or not to support BLM. Clinton had to respond one way or the other, and while in that regard, she made the right choice, it alienated these people that are disinclined to think the police are bad in any way ever. The "Blue Lives Matter" sentiment is scary strong in parts of the country.

Immigration, terrorism, and policing issues were tremendously important to the sort of people that flipped the Rust Belt states red. because they are scaredy cat baby people.

As I said, one of the things that amused me greatly about the interview was there was clearly things the interviewer wanted to hear from Atwood or wanted Atwood to say and Atwood refused to play along with any preconceived notions about her or beliefs and the interviewer was audibly aggravated. I mean even at the end Atwood said that she doesn't really care if her books stand the test of time or if she's even remembered at all because she'll be dead and therefore incapable of caring.

Margaret Atwood is very cool and good, and the art of good interviewing is almost dead. Interviewers come into these interviews with celebrities hoping to extract certain things, and then either they do, or they provoke hostility, or the celebrity actively trolls them. and if they don't get what they want, they write a hit piece on them, or take their words out of context so their outlet can get some sweet, sweet clickbait.

Talking about whether a piece of media is feminist or not is kinda stupid unless you use precise terminology and really know what you're talking about. And also what KIND of feminism it is, because "feminist" is about as specific as "existentialist". like, aggravatingly, people often use "feminism" when they mean a pretty narrow, upper class white version of feminism.
