Here's Georges Méliès' "The Astronomer's Dream" (1898). This is an interesting counterpart to "A Trip to the Moon" (1902). As "Trip" makes clear, Méliès finds the scientific mindset to be a target for ridicule. In "Dream," we see a more sympathetic, but by no means forgiving, take on the scientist.

The same imaginative, mercurial dream imagery that would go on to delight in "Trip" is inflected with a sense of despair and apprehension here. The astronomer fears that his aspiration, the moon, will always elude him, but it's more than that: what he finds, in exploration of the stars, is that the universe is utterly ambivalent to human life, and that even to read evil into that is hopeless narcissism.

But there's a deeper terror, still. The shifting, transmutative imagery at play in the film suggests a fear that strikes at the core of the scientific mindset: that the rule of the universe is chaos, that there is truly no consistency and no design in creation, and that all of the logic, method, and systems of the scientist are only narrow phenomenology, cobbled together out of a harrowing spiritual need.

I actually got more of a Faustian vibe from this short film. A scientist obsessed with discovering the mysteries of the universe strikes a deal with the devil, but soon comes to realise that no physical experience can bring him lasting happiness. In the end, he is saved from damnation by divine intervention. A condemnation of those who would literally and figuratively reach for the stars while neglecting their spiritual well-being, but simultaneously a celebration of divine grace.

It's a really cool short either way, though, with a fantastic-looking moon. Thanks for posting it.

A while ago, someone asked which films from the They Shoot Zombies list were available on Youtube. I was curious myself, so I did a little digging. Here are all the films from the top 100 which I could find, with their respective ranking shown in brackets.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (4): This one has hardcoded Spanish subtitles.
Night of the Living Dead (9)
Suspiria (11)
Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens (16): There are a million versions of the film on Youtube, but I'm partial to this one.
The Omen (23)
Hellraiser (38)
The Innocents (40): Another one with hardcoded Spanish subs.
Braindead (41)
Re-Animator (43)
Ringu (45)
Les Yeux sans visage (48)
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (49)
Repulsion (50): Hardcoded Spanish subs.
Black Christmas (54)
The Sixth Sense (57)
The Mist (63)
El espinazo del diablo (70)
Carnival of Souls (78)
Ginger Snaps (84)
Phantasm (86)
Vampyr (91)
Zombi 2 (92)

Not all of these are in pristine quality, but that's still a surprising number of great films. I also thought that Paramount itself had uploaded Jacob's Ladder last year, but I couldn't find it.

The Brood (104): Hardcoded Croatian subs.
Onibaba (107): The image quality isn't great, and the English subtitles are noticeably delayed, which can be a bit of a nuisance.
In the Mouth of Madness (111)
The Hills Have Eyes (119)
The Phantom of the Opera (122): I think this is the 1929 reissue, but someone more knowledgeable on the subject like Egbert would probably know for sure.
House on Haunted Hill (130)
Martin (133)
The Devil’s Rejects (140)
The Masque of the Red Death (143)
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (144)
Vargtimmen (152)
Dead Ringers (153)
Tenebre (155)
Kairo (160)
Häxan (162): There's another version which has English subs for the intertitles but much worse image quality.
Shivers (164)
The Hitcher (168)
White Zombie (174)
Sei donne per l’assassino (177): In English, sadly.
Reazione a catena (182): English again. There is an Italian version with English subtitles, but the image quality is much worse.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (184)
The Old Dark House (185)
Planet Terror (191)
They Live (192)
Prince of Darkness (194)

On a sidenote, the list's rankings make no sense to me. Event Horizon and Zombieland above The Night of the Hunter? The Devil's Rejects and Planet Terror among the 200 greatest horror films ever made?

Shane is situated in an interesting position, along that spectrum. It’s fondly remembered as a classic, nostalgic, traditional western of the Virginian pattern. I remember my dad watching it often in my childhood. But seeing it myself with fresh eyes, it’s just so unapologetically weird!

The director, George Stevens, headed the army unit which was responsible for filming D-Day and the liberation of Dachau, which makes me wonder how much this experience influenced his work on Shane. The film certainly feels a lot more wary of violence as a means to an end than many of its contemporaries.

Though my favourite bit of trivia about Shane is that the distinctive gun firing sound was achieved by shooting a cannon into a garbage can. It's a brilliant idea, and it gives the shootouts an intensity that few other westerns manage to equal.

The ranking algorithm is kind of interesting. If I understand it correctly, They Shoot Zombies basically aggregates of a ton of different best-of-horror lists. So to place near the top, a film needs to be considered a) great and b) horror. That's why films like Frenzy or Come and See are comparatively low on the list. They're fantastic, but a lot of people don't consider them to be part of the horror genre, so they show up in fewer places. I assume that's also why Mulholland Dr. is #209 even though it's easily better than most entries in the top 100.

Yeah, I just enter the relevant search terms (usually title and year, sometimes title and director or an alternate title) and see what comes up. There are a ton of uploads which are either in a different language, intentionally shoddy quality to get around the copyright detection, or simply clickbait, but you start recognising those fairly quickly after a while. Conversely, you also start noticing accounts which consistently upload quality content. Every film with hardcoded Croatian subtitles is by the same guy, for example.

Why, is there a more convenient way? :v:

Good lord, Samuel Clemens you weren't kidding about Planet of the Vampires. loving awesome, easily among the top 3 best movies about finding a bunch of very big skeletons in space.

It's a really pretty film, too. Almost on par with Forbidden Planet in terms of colour usage and set design.
