To be fair they were talking to an Italian during the first wave, while Italy was getting rocked by Covid in a way other countries didn't.

oh I wasn't looking down on their response. if I'd been a radio war nerd subscriber at the time, that first mention on the podcast would probably have been the first time I'd heard about covid. I was not paying attention

and yeah I figured the war nerd's familiarity italy and/or annibale would confirm the severity pretty quick. guess I have more annibale to look forward to!

are there twitch streamers who are just like body men? Like they'll physically play the game, keep descriptions and choices mostly high level and zero or at least minimal riffing etc., and let guests everyone actually wants to see call the shots and react to things etc? Would be kind of a hard model to get off the ground (and yeah the guest would probably be more likely to be an actor or comedian) but would love to see John Dolan hang out rooting for his dwarves in like a savage biome or whatever.

I really hate how the new guest keeps harping on the invasion of Hungary and Guyana being the "ugliest incidents" of the Cold War. I know what he's getting at but it's impossible for me to not think of Korea & Vietnam, or Afghanistan.

Yeah he led with it and he closed with it and it was rough. Like at least he seemed faithful to basic facts of the specific topic of his book but if he ever walked the lens back a bit it got real dicey.

Rabe seems to have one piece of writing not about the Americas, and it's the Normandy paratrooper book he pitched at the end.

I think he is just an anti-communist, and the tragedy of the US supervision of Guyana is that in his opinion there was no threat of communist takeover. Listening to the episode I thought he was just a Guayana specialist, but he's written a bunch of other books about the Cold War in Latin America so he knows about the other horrors.

i appreciate that RWN takes on guests from a range of standpoints. this guy was clearly a bourgeois patriotic historian, but he knows the story pretty well and it's a very interesting story in a lot of ways so i didn't mind his editorialising much.

when I hear this sort of ‘actually my area of knowledge is the most important and understudied’ stuff from academic historians I assume it’s a hangover from writing grant applications, not a coherent world theory or something data driven.

British Guyana is actually understudied though, which I guess creates its own problems. I think you're right that he's internalized his own sales pitch.
