Yeah it was great. The description of way regional investment flows drive conflict was not something I'd heard articulated that well before.

Also throwing in a vote for Episode 106, which has the History of Byzantium guy talking about that very topic in a war nerd context.

They tease a 7th century Islamic conquests episode which I really hope they do one day.

Seconding Ep 147 with Isa Blumi, that guy is just non stop capital I Insight.

I also enjoyed Ep 106 with Robin Pierson who runs History of Byzantium. They tease a history of the formation of Islam ep at the end which I wish they’d do.

I’m only half way through but the new ep is a classic - great guest talks about the dynamism of the fifties non aligned movement as well as Indonesia. as an Australian I know slightly more about Indonesia than the layman they describe but even what I knew was pretty wrong. also features new John almost dying due to meekness story.

yeah the various conversations about the willingness of different cultures to accept different levels of casualties in war as acceptable for example is very interesting, but it’s turns into ‘the x are a warrior people’ in ways that feel like an RPG statbook.

I don't think it's a political shift so much as a perspective shift. During History of Rome and the early parts of Revolutions his approach is very hands-off and dry but around Haiti is where it hits home how awful these states were to the people enslaved under them and how revolution ends up happening as an inevitablity. You can hear how frustrated he is with how cruel and disconnected Louis XVI or the Romanovs are.

I think he's still a soft-left lib but he's at least started to emote on history rather than approach it as spectacle.

Haiti is also where he notices that every time the US enters the narrative it’s to make things worse.

i think both these points can be correct. i could hear mark and john making scooby doo noises when he said estonia was right to join nato but in general i appreciated his perspective. i'm not sure how to square "russia is the #x exporter of y and without these commodities the world is hosed when russia retaliates with trade barriers" and "wow russia is about to make a killing by exporting commodities!!" though. he absolutely got a side-eye out of me two or three times

I heard it as the commodities will go to China in non USD transactions. Agree he had some weird takes (he said 'the US started the war' a few too many times) but I like the finance reporter version of war nerd.

My one complaint about the new episode is how they keep bringing up the "rules based order" like it's a real thing, and not something that only applies to Europe.
