What do you do with dogs wearing gas masks anyway? Are they just cheap sight hound sentries or something?

All the dogs are wearing gas masks. They aren't going to scent anything or bite anything while wearing gas masks. Humans can shoot just fine while wearing gas masks, but it seems like the only thing the dogs could do would be act as marginal pairs of eyes, hence the sight hound (as opposed to scent hounds) comment.
