Some of our favorite games went through crazy development processes. In some cases early versions were drastically altered or thrown out and restarted or even made into entirely different games. Let's talk about alphas/betas/prototypes

This is the very first Alpha WoW class/faction selection screen. Gnomes and trolls weren't even part of the design plan yet and were added later

Resident evil 2 looked totally different and the story was intended to end with this installment. The capcom manager overseeing the developers made them throw the whole thing out and start over with a less modern look

Resident evil 4 went through 4 different versions, one of which became Devil May Cry. I can't find any shots

A mall one I forgot:
During the. Bloodborne network test, someone found a way to clip a wall and get to father gascione. If you died to him he would say, "sick creature, may you Rest In Peace... Umbasa..." suggesting a connection to demons souls. It was maybe just there to gently caress with people but you weren't supposed to get to Gasciogne anyway

RE4 is so good its creation was responsible for another classic series.

The 'make contact' gesture in bloodborne is a ninety degree angle and it shows the brain that you understand math so it gives you that rune

this might just be something that was passed around in highschool but wasn't DMC originally gonna be resident evil? but capcom decided it was way too different so they turned it into a new, separate ip?

the completely insane looking battlefront that was in development and then scrapped is also worth taking a look at. they showed a massive land battle, and then getting into a spaceship and just flying up into the sky to engage in a huge space war. none of this would've been possible on current hardware but it's crazy that it was even made

thank you for posting this dude

One Nation, Under God.
Metroid Zero Mission originally had a comic-book art style with character designs that more closely resembled the original game but they scrapped everything and redid everything in the style of Super Metroid

"It appears that this idea might well have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. [Hideki Kamiya] went on to to say that the people at Nintendo viewing this concept in particular was the point at which they decided the project could not be realised."

From the original wonderful 101 pitch for the Wii where the idea was kind of a smash bros thing where the 101 were all Nintendo characters

Advertising is the curse of the industry... when you realize your ad budget has to be like 3x your development budget you end up seeing whole almost complete games just tossed out because they won't make the ad money back

in the 90s and 2000s there are countless stories of stuff like this happening and all those hard working programmers getting shafted on the checks they were owed

beta screenshots reveal that basically everything about mario 64 got a makeover for release, and there are a lot of unused assets and items that can be found in the files.

morrowind concept art imagined Vivec as this massive city, teeming with street vendors, outdoor markets, gardens, etc. systems couldn't handle that level of activity, so pretty much everything was shoved inside the cantons, making it the very barren city that got shipped. i believe there are a few mods that try to make Vivec in that original image.

dark souls 1 also has entire missing questlines that were left on the cutting floor, theres many minutes of leftover dialogue in the audio files. i think vaatividya or someone put all of it on youtube and broke down how it relates to the story, its pretty cool

i cant rememeber which company was involved but it was a major AAA one, they hired 2 dev teams to make a demo for an upcoming game and gave them 6 months to work on it, without telling either of them they're competing with another dev team. they went with the demo they liked best, and sent the other team off without a dime and mandated they delete all their work and never speak about it again.

i guess it doesnt matter which company it was since this practice happened all the time and probably still happens today lol
