During the chip shortage (which is still somewhat going on) I heard that scam was happening on basically all of the "non authorised vendors" in China who'd say they had huge stocks of the chip but required you to "request a quote".

People would request a quote, get a very reasonable price, pay it, then get an e-mail saying "Oh no, during QA it turns out all the chips have been left out in the rain/are strangely dirty/inexplicably ruined in a non-quantifiable way, but we have another source for 10% more" and they'd just keep doing that until they got bored.

Some people on eevblog/etc. did actually keep paying as they were desperate and they'd usually eventually get the chip, after paying double or more the manufacturer's price, and none of them felt good about it. Most would just say "no" after the first step and get their money back.

I'd also just cancel it if someone on aliexpress tried it on me, and I consider aliexpress a lot more trustworthy than "the dodgy electronics co." or whatever.

not the same thing but i've heard of a similar problem from people who want to buy retro chips (a lot of old yamaha opl3 chips or something, for example), where all the chip sellers will say they've all got 2000 or so and that's great so the retro chip people build projects going "okay there's tons of these out there it's easy to buy them to repurpose."

then they go to buy them.

and suddenly no one has ANY. because it turns out only ONE person had any in the first place, and everyone else was just reporting they could buy the two thousand off the one guy who had them, creating an illusion of way, way more supply than there actually was in the market.

Why the gently caress would you buy a $1100 phone and then decorate it with this?

If they made one with standard rpg polyhedral dice I’d buy it. Having rolled dice wherever you go is really handy.

I'd like to believe I'm not a big enough nerd to get them but don't let that stop you.

Those I could lose though. The phone case you can just turn over and go “I got a 4. That’s a miss.” or whatever. Even better and faster than a phone dice app.

isn’t the issue with the mini pcs that longevity is an issue with regular use? i was wondering about using one for a “cheap” nas set up but the community remain pretty sceptical still as they have been reported to burn out after a while

I did see the Aoostar NAS, it’s a mini pc with potential for two huge TB drives though, so clearly manufacturers are thinking about it

I had reason to go look at the toaster again the other day. I think, and frankly this is crazy, it doesn't actually have a wifi connection. It's still like $500 dollars and has presets for loving gluten-free protein waffles, but it may actually not be network connected.

Is that not a common thing where you’re from? They were all the rage growing up here in the US, less common now, maybe, but still easy to get.

There's a lot more kitchen gadgets than any one person can have in a normal-ish sized kitchen. Like there are tons of specialty devices that do one kitchen prep task, and they do it well. But they take up space and need to be cleaned, so often the tradeoff is finding the specific things that one person needs for the stuff they make frequently. Not everyone needs apple corers, so people often don't have them.

what i'd really love if aliexpress had a replacement for is a pot scraper. i dunno how to get another one of these, the one i got was a hand-me-down from like my grandma's kitchen stuff when she died. but it's a piece of plastic, roughly the side of a credit card, with slightly curved sides coming to an edge. it's just the best at scraping off absolutely blackened/caked on poo poo when you've hosed up or done something absolutely hardcore, and i keep looking at various kitchen/cleaning supply places and no one seems to make that kind of poo poo any more.
