During the Trad Games chat thread, an argument ocurred. While there was an agreement that BESM (Big Eyes Small Mouth - an universal "Play Any Kind Of Anime" RPG) was just the WORST, no one could really come up with a good system to use to play an anime campaign.

So gently caress it, let's be constructive and fix the problem by making some kick-rear end anime RPGs ourselves!

This contest will run a little differently than most on the board, as the only way to avoid the problems of BESM is to not make a universal system, but to make a game that can run a particular kind of anime. I've crafted a list of "Anime Genres", and like a 48 film competition you'll be assigned one at random. Will you have to make the best Magical Girl RPG? Perhaps a "Fish/Fishes Out of Water" story? WHO KNOWS!

Anime can be released in different ways and are created to serve different purposes and entertain different audiences. The best way we can simulate that is to introduce a "Modifier", which every entry has to utilize. Will you have to make a mash-up of two genres? Will you need to use your RPG to promote an item for sale (which, for some reason, is sold seperately)? Does it need to encourage a Melodramatic story, or an ULTRAVIOLENT ONE? All will be revealed at the start of Week 1. All entries must be a Sequel Series that involve something from the past as something the characters in the game are affected by.

Before Week 1: Sign-Ups are open! As soon as I have 8 participants, I'll be drawing each participant's randomly chosen Anime Genre. Did you wait too long and 8 already signed up? No worries! Just post here and let me know you need a genre - everyone who signed up by January 19th was given theirs that evening, so I can draw yours as soon as I know you're in! Sign ups end January 28th at 11:59p CST: sign up by then and you'll get your Anime Genre. I'll also be posting the whole contest's Anime Modifier then, so everyone gets both at the same time.

Week 1: Come up with an RPG concept that will fit your Genre and uses the contest's Modifier, then post a 150 word ad-blurb that would go on the back of the corebook if it was sold in stores by February 5th at 11:59p CST.

Week 2: Make some progress writing up something and post proof of your efforts by February 12th at 11:59p CST.

Week 3: Have a rough draft ready and submit it by February 19th at 11:59p CST. It doesn't need to be perfect, but it should be playable because...

Weeks 4, 5, and 6: Have your rough draft playtested by someone else participating in the contest, and playtest (or find some people to playtest) someone else's game. Submit your thoughts by March 12th at 11:59p CST. Use their feedback to...

Week 7: Finish up your game and submit it no later than Sunday, March 19th by 11:59p CST.

1. Your game MUST embody your assigned genre, and incorporate the contest's modifier.
2. Your game must be an original IP - Even if Go Nagai gave you permission to make a Cutey Honey RPG, you wouldn't be able to use that IP for this contest.
3. Also, your game needs to be original for this contest. There is nothing wrong with modifying Cortex+ or D20, but the theme needs to be represented by your mechanics, and the game must be created during the contest.
4. You can do whatever you like with whatever you make - sell it, give it away, lock up all copies in a safe - but by participating you give me permission to record an Actual Play podcast session using your final entry, if you are one of the chosen finalists.
5. You are expected to submit by the listed time and date listed at the end of each week in the schedule. All times are listed as CST, so you might need to convert it to whatever timezone you live in.
6. Because I know life can both suck and throw unexpected hurdles your way, you get One Late Pass (see below).

Late passes allow you to miss a deadline and still be in the running. As long as you submit both the missed deadline and the current one, you'll still have an opportunity to win! Now, as anyone who has watched anime has seen, being late to class requires a punishment. You'll need to write 150 word fanfic related to your entry and submit it by that deadline as well. Feel free to use the fanfic in your entry if you like, it could come in handy. The other option is for you to donate to the prize pile instead of writing a fanfic (with your donation being given randomly at the end of the contest to someone who didn't make it to the finals).

After the final deadline, I'll pick the four eight finalists. All four eight will be played on my podcast with my gaming group, and the winner will get a $35 DriveThruRPG gift certificate to spend as they see fit. All of the finalists, however, will get lesser amounts of DriveThruRPG gift certificates. DriveThruRPG actually donated them, and if we get more than 8 entries I'll give out rewards to the top 8 entries (though the top 4 will still be the only ones featured on the podcast) we have over 20 participants, so I've asked DTRPG for more support and have keys for Tabletop Simulator to giveaway as well. Plus, I'll feature all 8 finalists on the podcast. Also, there are super-secret maybe anime related prizes, so that's a thing.

Awesome, I can totally work with this. Just got to look through Ryuutama again, watch me some Patlabor, lightly season with Fruits Basket and garnish with a dash of Natsume Yuujinchou...

So for Slice of Life I can aim for a relaxed feeling instead of relying on the "school hijinks" segment of the genre right? Like take Patlabor for example. It's technically a Real Robot/Police series, but it's super low-key most of the time and focused on the daily lives of the characters. You'd be hard pressed to say it's not slice-of-life in spirit. And I mean...it's one of my favorite shows and I wanna put its influences in my silly anime RPG :v:

I completely understand if incorporating that kinda thing steps on other genres' toes too much.

In all the editing of a pancake party trailer for a client, I totally missed your question! Thousand pardons, my friend.

In what way can you shape the mechanics to encourage that feeling? I love the way PbtA games use their experience point questions to encourage and celebrate players embracing the tenants and feel of the genre they are going for.

Slice of Life could be used in these other genres, but the relationship dynamic and interaction with the world as a whole (and how that affects the characters) would make your game your assigned genre rather than something else.

Does that help?

If this passes the buck in an unacceptable way, let me know and I'm happy to back out now.

So, having your game be playtested is a requirement. I would prefer you playtest someone's game (as that would help them out), so do schedule something. I am willing to accept having someone else take care of playtesting someone else's game in your stead if push came to shove, but you would need to put in the work to make that a possibility. The person who playtests for you would need to get you their feedback on the game as it stands in time for you to upload their findings as a post here in time for the deadline.

Well you can't copyright mechanics. You can trademark and copyright specific terms, but not mechanics. Basically what this means is to be completely in the clear you'd have to rewrite all the stuff so you're not directly plagiarizing the game text.

This only matters if you're trying to make a real game out of it, usually fanworks aren't pursued because the money involved is nonexistent in the RPG industry.
For this contest, you'd need to write it in a way that you could sell it if you wanted to. But Kwyndig is right, only key terms can be copyrighted. Mechanics are fair game.

Quick clarification to the word counts:

I'll paste the Ad Copy or Fanfics into a Google Doc, Highlight it, and use the word count tool on the selection.

While Ad Copy (the 150 word description) will need to be exactly 150 words, fanfics can be longer. Also, the Ad Copy can be accompanied by more detailed descriptions of what you're working on.

Whoever playtests it, or is interested in the game (of Mah Jong) in general, there ya go.

EDIT: And since some of you are using Cortex+, or could just use these for whatever you're working on, here's an album of dice icons I made that are public domain.

So, I originally intended on drawing the genres separately for each group of 8 contestants (to allow for some duplicate genres to be drawn) and release all that info with the modifier at the start of week one. But you raise a good point: time for research is always helpful...

How would you all feel about getting your genres early (today, and whenever anyone else signs up), but getting the modifier at the start of week one?

Davin Valkri posted:

Just for clarity's sake, what does "modifier" entail? Is it a theme that all works need to hew towards, or a character they all need to have, or a plotline they all need to use?

It's an extra requirement: The games must be ultra-violent, or the games must be made for short campaigns (that can be played over three to five session, perfect length for a convention or spring break). It could even be a requirement that your game uses some thing that can be sold separately (such as using a deck of cards for resolution, or involving the use of a particular prop - up to the game creator as to what would be used). But regardless, unlike an anime genre everyone needs to involve it in their game

Which brings us to tonight: I'll be posting everyone's assigned genres in a couple of hours (I just need to get some more work done and compile the finished list). Feel free to register for a trial of Crunchyroll to use for research. The rest of the contest will continue as scheduled, with the cut-off for signing up being January 28th at 11:59p CST. Mushi-shi and Monster Musume are examples of fantasy that aren't just D&D. If this is too generic, I can offer something a little different to anyone unsatisfied with their genre. I have a backup that didn't wind up on the list.

Thank you. Looks like I have a lot of research to do.

First impressions on a quick look, Giant Robot seems very like animated Super Sentaii. Would that be a correctish assumption?

They share some similarities. I'd define Giant Robot about faith in oneself and bonds with others enabling you to overcome the impossible, while Sentai being about faith and relationships with others enabling the group to overcome a great many foes.

So, different clothing on siblings I guess. Biggest difference is team size, in my opinion: Giant Robot taps out at around 2-3, Sentai traditionally is 5 or more.

Honestly, I'd recommend Zyuranger for a newcomer to sentai -- it's a really good "pure" sentai series, and some of the newer series can get really cluttered. (To be fair, even the older series can be pretty cluttered; Dairanger, the series that followed Zyuranger, is a hot mess of weird half-finished plots.) Carranger is also great, although maybe less of a beginner series, because it's pretty goofy and has elements of parody.

(yes, yes, I know, nerd trap sprung)

Also Shinkenger is a great example of the kinds of character relationships and dynamics that can be useful for an RPG in that genre. It was the Sentai I started with, so it's beginner friendly, plus they're samurai-themed and poo poo.

Can I request some examples of how this will be judged? All of the anime I can think of of the type (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, Devil is a Part Timer, Gate) use fish out of water as a modifier for another genre, like fantasy, slice of life, or even period piece (time travel stories).

To me, the genre is best represented by having an individual (or individuals, such as a group of players) put into a situation they are unprepared for, and force them to use the skills they do have (along with luck, tenacity, and teamwork) to get through the situation.

Plutonis had a great idea for implementing this, though it was based on both Fish / Fishes Out of Water and Fantasy.

An example of an existing game that does that (though in a non-anime way) is Level 99 Games "Infinity Dungeon" - In it, each player draws a different character card to play as, such as these:

...then the players have to get through dungeon rooms like these with just the items and skills that the characters have on their persons:

That is more-or-less what I consider the genre of Fish / Fishes Out Of Water. Do something with that kind of contrast, and you'll be fine. Does that help?

I'm not sure what sci-fi doesn't cover, honestly, outside of outright fantasy. It's a bit troublesome. I have some ideas but it's tough to think of something that might lead to interesting mechanics actually related to anime that isn't just... a sci-fi game.

Well, Outlaw Star would be a great place to start. Sure, it has spaceships and going around the galaxy exploring and docking and meeting different species, but it HAS A NUDE WOMAN WORK AS A PART OF THE SHIP, AND SHIPS HAVE ARMS AND FIGHT EACH OTHER. So do Sci-Fi, but anime it up, I guess?

The offer still stands to swap out a genre for the one not in the original list, if anyone feels like their selection is too vague and they want to try what's in the mystery box.

That's actually an important question, thanks for bringing it up! TheSoundNinja, do I need to match the themes of cyberpunk or the themes of cyberpunk anime?

A part of the reason to include Transhumanism was to try and offset that. The anime's themes would be more important.

The exploration of "What is human?" in the Ghost in the Shell movies and S.A.C. could be a good place to start.

Also, consider the good ol' Ultraviolence in a world that is past our modern day - where new tools have been created, and the value of life is lessened. Or the overcomplication of branding and product placement, such as in Tiger and Bunny (while it isn't fully "cyberpunk", that is a cyberpunk element of it).

Using the genre well should enable players to discuss those themes after playing a story or session of your game. Does that help? The mystery box is still available.

Actually, in the parallel almost-same universe as the original Harlock, try Cosmo Warrior Zero. It features a captain of similar honor tasked with hunting Harlock down, while helping his diverse crew (staffed with humans and robots who invaded and won Earth) get along while he himself is still getting over the death of his wife and daughter at the hands of these forces.

As for me... still no progress, but I'm leaning towards a more cops game lately. Although with my current state of mind, it would be next to impossible to actually have 'fun' playing any game focused around police that I build.

That's one of the things I like Mad Bill 34 for - everything in it is so over-the-top that it makes Law and Order look like Sesame Street.

However, there is something to be said for cop tropes. And high school student council run discipline department could be fun...

Or moderators in an MMO

Or paladins (in a fantasy world) who are a part of the order of Justitia, who detain bad guys and solve crimes FOR JUSTICE, DAMNIT!

Either way, if this genre doesn't work, that's fine. The cut-off is one day after the first person claims the mystery box. At that point, I'll be requiring some sort of fanfic-hazing to swap to the for now "mystery" ""genre"". Final genres are locked in when the modifier is revealed (as design has to begin by then).

Count me in.

As a note though, I won't be able to playtest someone else's game because my group does not have a consistent weekly or even monthly meeting. I can try to schedule something now to try to address it in advance, but I'm not confident I can find a place in my group's schedule when I only have one weekend to playtest it.

I think that can work as a compromise. What do you guys think?
