There really just needs to be more variation in ship design to make the designer feel like it actually adds something rather than just being extra work. The very limited choices in slot type/size layout and the rock-paper-scissors of combat restrict design decisions a lot in terms of what's possible and advisable, and the tech tree is still really lacking in game-changing unique techs and doesn't really encourage deep specialisation beyond the midgame.

I can see why that stuff is limited, since it would be a huge pain to balance, but the designer right now isn't interesting to play with. Every ship right now ends up working basically the same. This would all be of limited help, of course, if it's still about jamming doomstacks together like a three year old playing with action figures rather than thinking strategically about having a bunch of different roles in the fleet and how they work together.

go full star ruler

Custom ships own when they're fun. Star Ruler gives you a whole load of crazy poo poo to throw together and make fun ships. As long as stellaris ships are boring, designing them will be too.

Yeah, less that the ship designer itself is bad, or that it's a bad idea, and more just that it feels a bit meaningless in the context of everything around it.

Is there any likelihood of a significant revamp or expansion to the combat tech tree (or just tech in general)? Having some more exciting things to put into the ships is what we need. Also, more exciting things to build and diplomacise with.

Range and speed of ships simply doesn't matter enough because we have no control over fights. If having more speed and range meant you could actually kite things, then yeah those would be worthwhile stats to tweak to balance out the different weapons.

Range and speed are still important to deal with the whack-a-mole style wars I always seem to end up in.

While we're banging on about awful bits of combat, god enemy fleets are annoying. I have to clear them out in order to land my hundred assault armies on every planet and bulk up my warscore, but they keep jumping away and because they're always approaching from the other end of the system, it's a real pain to actually trap them in combat. I swear most of the actual effort I put into this game is trying to guess where they'll jump next and making sure I enter the system near them. In the end, it always devolves into me giving up and dragging some construction ships halfway across the galaxy to build a thick ring of military stations to stick them down for half a minute,

Is there a way to see all the untapped mining/research points in my empire?

Panning around all my newly conquered regions and hunting little white numbers is a bit of a pain.

If you toggle off the detail checkbox towards the bottom right of the screen it will only display the numbers that are in your empire and unexploited.

Well. That's probably something I should have noticed sooner.

Thanks!

I don't really like any of those ship graphic styles you have to select at the beginning of the game (and they haven't bothered to add an extra one now there's robots as well as the other species types). Are there any good mods to increase my options there? I don't want to actually add a bunch of dumb new ship types, just some new models for the existing classes.
