a game where there are no AI empires?
Sorta a Battlestar Galactica kind of thing.

More of a Foundation universe kind of thing.

I started as pacifist / egalitarian / xenophile and played as if I was militarist once I got a federation going with neighboring xenophile empires. Midgame turned into waiting for truce timers to expire and then picking a neighbor to dogpile with Liberate war demands. Vassal / integrate, rinse / repeat.

One problem with my promiscuous alliance-building was associate members routinely being at war with each other, with defense pacts kicking off annoying fratricidal wars within the federation. The final war with the last unfederated empire wound up with my 320k doomstack encountering a 450k doomstack belonging to the defense-pacted associate member who therefore was red-while-associated. Battle wasn't going well for me until the Federation starfleet jumped in behind them unexpectedly. I should have sent a story-telling guy to tell this story, it was the highlight of this multi-century game.

The grey empires are vassals of federation members. The 60% victory happened some time ago, now I'm just gardening the universe.

Anyone else have a hell of a time trying to figure out what to play as? I just kinda stare at all the options in the empire designer and just space out.

Yeah. Decided to play a warmonger with fanatic militarist and xenophobe, and bulked up fire rate with other choices. Started cleaning up local non-empire threats with smaller fleets than I was used to when my science ships ran across a temple.

A decade later we're fanatic spiratualists, stamping out the last of the militarist with a growing pacifist faction. Once I embrace them and pick up Agrarian Idyll I'm likely to revert to builder style again. So I started a new game as an all-consuming hive mind.

The fleet design pattern I was using, I think might be outdated. Was a small ship fleet design, with a 1 : 3 : 9 ratio between cruisers, destroyers, and corvettes. The destroyers were 2:1 artillery:point defense, and corvettes were 2:1 interceptor:torpedo, with the cruisers being artillery with carrier middles. Nearly all ships kinetic + plasma cannons.

I am using a mod that lets me set combat computers for each ship, so the PD destroyers are set to Escort, corvettes set to hit and run at their weapons range, etc.

It's working ... ok. But now I'm reading battleships are worthwhile? To the point of massing these things?

I'm going to be guessing that Range is King, and kinetics are the only worthwhile weaponry. I just can't help thinking that throwing a battleship fleet up against anything major will result in the BBs getting melted while the tiny remainder buzzes around ineffectually.

Main reason I'm asking is because i saw the future. Well, I'm back on an older save 10 years ago after loving myself with rushing synth supremacy.

I started assimilating my empire, just went whole hog. I spent most of my mineral stockpile on a ringworld repair when my energy and mineral income went to triple-digit negative. While I was scrambling around moving pops and trading energy for minerals and hoping the assimilation will finish up fast, the Contingency showed up with four machine worlds almost entirely within my federation (which is about half the size of the main federation). This followed on the heels of two simultaneous wars, one won and one lost, against the dumb member in my federation.

After letting that shitshow run its course for a couple years, I went back to my Ancient Dreadnaught pre-attack save about ten years prior.

Neither MOO1 or 2 had lanes? No one played 3.

They were all 'warp' all the time. Wait... no... you could eventually build instant travel gates, I think.

Yes, you could build stargates, and MOO2 had wormholes that connected distant parts of the map as though they had gates, but only a few at most in the entire map.

But yes, hyperlanes was not a thing in MOO (can't remember MOO3, think I only put a few hours into that one).

Ascendancy was the first space game I played that used star lanes exclusively.
