If you have more than one receiver one the field at a time he will have trouble going through his reads for 14 games a year. On the other hand, his mobility is a real asset behind your subway turnstile offensive line.

It's hard to freak out when the problems have been the same for years. I just give a sort of eye roll now.

The defense is a sieve like always - I wanna say there were two or three straight completions to Sanu in the first quarter where he was totally uncovered. A healthy Mike Daniels making the front more effective will make the defense work better, but he doesn't solve the communication problems (or the personnel problems) in the secondary.

The offense can't play at all against decent man coverage, the same problem they've had since the Kansas City game in 2011.

That being said, they'll still win the division.

It's not the Packers style to pick up free agents to replace injuries (with minor exceptions like James Jones in 2015), but I could see picking up Kaep working out if TT suddenly became a much more active GM.

For instance, if he were able to facilitate ten multi-party trades such that Dom Capers coached the opposing defense every week.

On a more serious note, the Packers have a really weird offense that is short on typical West Coast concepts and long on Rodgers pulling off crazy sandlot stuff and I don't think even a very good pocket passer with the ability to move around in the pocket and extend plays could thrive in it quickly. Especially given the 60% casualty rate on the offensive line. The options are spend money on a guy and miss the playoffs or don't spend money and miss the playoffs.

Although I guess that in this division this sort of thing is always possible (cf. 2013):

Are you talking about the same Packers team that has played their only good pass rusher out of position on the inside for several years? I don't think that happened because Dom Capers was handed a bunch of talented players to fit his scheme no, quite the opposite. Dom Capers isn't a defensive genius these days but he's adequate. The problem is the roster is sub par besides the hall of fame qb.

Besides 2014, Matthews hasn't seen that much time at ILB; when he was being played there a lot, he was more productive than when on the edge. He also hasn't been the only productive outside rusher for the last few years (in fact in 2015 and 2016, Peppers and Perry were both more productive than he was on the outside), and his occasional bad habits from years ago like over-committing instead of setting the edge on run plays have become the new normal for him.

It turns out MD Jennings also got signed by the Bears in 2014! Don't know why - he couldn't play at all, and the only scheme stuff he could have taught you would be how to get blown by for a TD which your defense was already proficient at by then.

When I was a kid, my dad would take me to River Rats games (they were the Devils' farm team at the time). They ran a variant of the Devils' neutral zone trap that was pretty effective. It was fun to watch, and through a scheme that would take too long to explain I once got to have dinner with Patrik Elias when I was seven. So woohoo AHL for me.

The ILB coach is the only firing that confused me. Blake Martinez took a big step forward this year and Jake Ryan seems solid most of the time*. Overall the unit is performing better than it has since 2010 (before Desmond Bishop got hurt). If they think they're giving up too many big runs up the middle they should look at all the two-man fronts that Dom is calling before anything else.

* Occasionally I see people making GBS threads on Ryan on CHTV or in game day threads, so I double checked my gut feeling that he's pretty good with PFF, and it turns out they love his nuts and rate him 82.something. This is actually very slightly higher than they rate Martinez! I know their methodology of basically assigning +, - or 0 to each play and adding poo poo up over the season then normalizing on a 0-100 scale is far from perfect but IMO as a general barometer they're pretty good
