hello yakuza thread. Like many before me I played Y0 for the first time this year and loved it so much I am embarking on playing the whole series. have done kiwami and kiwami 2 and am going to take a break before I play y3, both because my backlog is being neglected and because I figure it might soften the blow of the marked decrease in quality that people talk about

very good series though. I am at peace with nothing coming close to 0's storytelling, was a bit concerned during kiwami that it was more indicative of the rest of the series but k2 has been reassuring, in gameplay terms at least.

I've also ignored all common sense and done all the achievements for all the games I've played so far (pending completion of my Legend run in K2). Its actually not been that bad but I dunno if I'll go full Policenaut if the requirements get worse in future.

Suppose I'll break down the sticking points for each game.

Y0: catfights is naturally the worst thing by a mile. Lack of gambling cheat items for the casino is probably a lot more tedious if this isn't your first game but it was all novel enough to me that I was happy to do the gambling games legit. Weapon collecting is also a bit of a slog but once you're rich you can blitz through it. Telephone club is also annoying due to the random element. Also, having to do Legend on a fresh save makes it take way longer than the victory lap it would be on NG+. And the car chase on legend is awful, plus its followed by having to keep your escorted person losing HP from being grabbed in the next few fights. This game has a 0.9% rate of people getting all achievements on Steam and I understand why.

Kiwami: weapon collecting sucks poo poo in this one. They're tucked away everywhere (even behind shogi and mahjong though these ones aren't required) and you don't have enough money to get enough without grinding coliseum or selling weapons back. Once again the Legend car chase sucks too and happens straight after the restaurant level & boss so they need repeating if you game over.

e: just remembered what was the hardest thing in the entire game for me - Haruka's request for you to beat a pool expert at rotation. Jesus christ that was rough

K2: bouncer missions. There's just too many. Even with a set of infinite use weapons it gets pretty tedious. Grinding points at the batting centre for the primers might get old fast. Otherwise this has an extremely reasonable completion list.

Disclaimer for all the above: I love mahjong and don't mind Climax Battles with the exception of the one with the stupidly jacked up Sera fight in 0, but I understand if these would be the breaking point for other people

Pool must suck less on PC, right? On PS4, advanced and expert rotation are the last things I need for 100% minigame completion, and I'm certainly not going to try Legend difficulty without the golden gun.

That's the fight I'm most looking forward to on Legend, because Majima is much more aggressive than even most other bosses. The knife QTE always puts me on edge (heh) no matter what game or engine.

pool still sucks poo poo unfortunately but i got quite lucky with a few mistake prone expert AIs. darts was also very hard

for the golden pistol though - i'm sure that's the completion reward for all substories, not minigames? if that helps any, doesn't make pool go away but you can take a break to do a legend run

more worried that I haven't burned out yet while 100%ing each entry as I go

speaks to an unsalvageable level of brain rot I think

Anyway I'm currently playing 4, enjoying it so far. Plot is relentlessly complicated but all the setpieces and character changes have kept me going. I also absolutely demolished mahjong requirements in a single game, scoring over 50k and getting seven pairs in the opening of tanimura's part

A blessing and a curse, as I no longer need to play mahjong, but if I do then I can just play legit without worrying about pulling off weird poo poo

I dunno if I just got lucky or the AI is better in remastered but I didn't find the 4th guy in fighter maker that bad in yakuza 4? Notably shitter than the first 3 but not the hell of retrying fights over and over that the internet said it would be

It's weird because even some of the "good" characters have shot people and there's been no deep examination of the corruption on their soul or whatever gravitas they attach to it. I'm sure Daigo shot someone in Kiwami 2 and nobody gave a poo poo

Space Harrier probably gave me the most trouble out of the four in Zero. Super Hang On is more fun and also much easier than Outrun imo

The ol "complain on the internet" trick worked for this, cleared level 50 handily shortly after.

Then played original Boxcelios and hit level 112. Torn on how much I want to bother with minigame completion as there's no achievement for it in Y4 but it gets you the golden pistol which makes the Legend run a lot faster.

Actually I assume the golden pistol is less useful as it'll be stuck on one character until the end? I would guess Saejima wants it more than anyone else

Playing Y3 Remastered and just had a hilarious but also really annoying bug. The game spawned 2 clones of the current boss I'm on Tamashiro, so I was constantly being shot, they each had the full health bar, and they each dropped their full exp when defeated, and the game didn't continue til I beat all 3.

I'm assuming I'm not the only one to experience this?

I recently made the fatal error of platting Y3 and this never happened

I feel like my y3 experience is worse off for it

Isn't this like saying "of all the times I've been punched directly in the dick, this was the best"

Well since you asked!!

Yak0: kiryu had p fun fight, majima did not but it was very cheesable via majimas counter move

Kiwami 1: hard but susceptible to tiger drop

K2: as above but also lots of furniture for heat moves

3: weirdly easy

4: hard hard hard. Saejima has the worst fight but they're all tricky. Not entirely cheesable via Tiger Drop, the fight demands you get involved rather than hope for the odd counter

Many Amon fights have been poo poo but cheesable but Y4 was the first time I felt like I had to embrace the mechanics (with pockets full of health regen items)

Mine tends to drop his guard on the three regular into two strong attack combos (I guess three square, two triangle or XXXYY depending on your controller) so try and get him with that when he's not in bullshit heat mode

His heat is always on a time limit too so if you're feeling cheap just run in circles until its gone

akiyama tells kiryu he's basically his hero in 4 since he's indirectly responsible for getting him off the streets, so stands to reason he'd be eager to keep in touch

working on the completion list for yakuza 5 and christ this game is big

It's the first time I've had to spam appstims and legendary drinkers to get the food and drink done, in the past I've usually had them 90% of the way there by pit stopping between other tasks

when doing it that way you really notice the more convenient locations - kanrai tends to get done quickly since its the only restaurant in the north whereas sushi gin is always last because its nowhere near anything of value

In terms of the coliseum I figure I'll go in ascending order of enjoyable playstyles. Get Shinada out the way early and save Kiryu and Saejima as a reward

Gunrhein is very weird and I'm glad it's only five levels long

you never ever have to play a fair match of shogi. there's always a challenge mode and winning the first easiest challenge repeatedly will count for completion metrics
