Tap "A" to drink!!!

I'd like to hear some opinions of people who saw and liked Hacksaw Ridge. I'm doing the Best Picture Showcase and it seemed universally reviled. Everything just seemed amateurish. The tone is all over the place, the script is laughable at parts, and the endless Jesus shots wore thin by the end.

I appreciate hearing your opinions. I can see where you're coming from, but the violence to me was over the top to the point of parody/comedy. Kung Fu grenade kick included.

Hugo Weaving was low key the best part of the film. I thought his performance was great.

Tap "A" to drink!!!

After watching Manchester this morning, I was able to see 8/9 of the Best Picture nominees. I'd rank them as follows:

Arrival
La La Land
Moonlight
Hell or High Water
Manchester
Lion
Hidden Figures
Hacksaw Ridge

I only felt that the top 3 movies were really on another level for the best picture prize. Hell or High Water / Manchester are great movies within their genre. I wouldn't have nominated the bottom three. Lion is kind of frustrating because the first half of the movie is really engaging and beautifully shot. Sunny Pawar as Young Saroo gave a good performance. I feel like once the movie switches in time to Dev Patel it loses something in the translation. The script is a lot more hurried and the pacing just goes by too quick / the ending doesn't provide the catharsis necessary to match what's happening on the screen. Hidden Figures was a mostly average to above average biopic with nothing really inspiring about it besides the acting of the leads. It falls into same genre pitfalls of other movies like it.

Personally I would have nominated The Lobster somewhere for Best Picture.

I guess if I were to make predictions:

Best Picture

Damien Chazelle

Emma Stone

I feel pretty strongly that La La Land / Moonlight is going to split the Picture / Director category in either direction

They're probably all on oxy or xanax after throwing down a couple drinks. Their nerves, those nominated, are probably off the charts. I don't blame them. No one's going to be on uppers, you can't smoke or vape in there.
