I really like ceilings.

My follow on training was at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX. A place considered a god forsaken hellhole by a service that puts bases in northern North Dakota. There's like a hundred thousand people there and absolutely. nothing. to. do.

I went to Ft Sill to sight see.

It was completely worthless training that left us all completely bored out of our skulls.

I had a blast. With nothing to do, and duties that we could do in our sleep, we ran wild. We acted like college students with cars, money, and a class six. Mountain climbing and bison watching in national parks. Visiting Geronimo's grave and the artillery museum. Bonfires and a turkey fry on Thanksgiving. Weekend trips all over the place. A class toga party. Mechanical bull riding. And karaoke. Lots and lots of karaoke. I was the worst best best worst.

Because especially when you need to make your own fun, It's really the people that make the station. And that was the best station I ever had.

I spent 7 1/2 months at Keesler AFB (post-Katrina). The training itself was mindnumbing (weather) and most of the MTLs were shitbags, but Biloxi was OK. I mean it's basically all casinos and Waffle Houses, but at least it was near water. We were close enough to the FL panhandle and NOLA that getting away for a weekend was easy.

I had to go back a couple of years later for some upgrade training, which was a much better experience, simply by not being an NPS tech schooler.

Went to Gordon in Oct of 90 for Tactical Telecom/Record Center training.

It was supposed to be 20 week MOS training.

Skipped out of the two week typing class, both field exercises, and had a truncated fixed station portion.

Thanks Desert Shield.

I went to the mechanical maintenance school at Aberdeen Proving Grounds - Edgewood for third shop mechanics, about a year after I finished a program at an automotive trade school.

The army version was basically, "follow the instructions in the book." It was watered down enough that you'd have to be mechanically inept to fail (Bush years what what). I fast-tracked through half the program until I hit a hiccup in hydraulics, and wound up having to do about six weeks of a then 16 week program, because I forgot hydraulics poo poo. Just the fact I was allowed to fast-track made me some sort of army unicorn. But it got me out of all that time and left me waiting on orders. I took four day passes every weekend I was there still waiting on orders (6 weeks or so). I got to play around on some ROTC exercises as opfor for a few weeks. And they really didn't give a poo poo what I did as long as I was there for PT and formations.

And I could smoke. That was the best part.

“We don’t really know where this goes — and I’m not sure we really care.”
For maneuver LTs at Benning the post BOLC time for follow on courses is called "blackbirding". When I wasn't in a course I showed up for PT and a 1000 formation and then went home for the day. I probably spent about two and a half months of days like that. It was pretty sweet but Columbus, GA is a festering poo poo hole of a city.

For courses I went to the Army Reconnaissance Course and some COIN course I can't remember the name of. Both of those courses were good. My final course was Stryker Leader Course which was a horrible waste of 3 weeks.

10,000 YEARS WASN'T ENOUGH LURKING
Oh god Sheppard. I was there for like 6 months for tech school and I hated every minute of it. Literally nothing to do and heaven help you if you wanted to go somewhere interesting like Dallas because inevitably your request would get turned down because some rear end in a top hat in the dorm failed their room inspection of some nonsense. The only good news was my roommate ghosted with his wifey off-base in a motel 90% of the time.

My parent also drove down to drop off my car and I remember they wanted to see the falls :laffo:
