Lincoln posted:Living in bin. Ah, but of course. They've been hanging out there for a couple weeks on and off. I suspect that there used to be a bunch of mice in there.

The snakes are still... co-habitating? Guess that's the right word. (I liked the 'living in bin' thing.) I really wasn't aware that different species of snakes would live together in the wild. They've been there for a couple of months now. I'm also falling a bit behind on turning the compost over, for some reason.

Used to be a lot of mice in there, must still be some in the area. There's another bin right next to it.

~summer is the time for loving~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAP6Dq-ZsF4 I think it's loving, anyways. The video is long because I was hoping something else would happen but eventually a bee came by and the video goes out of focus so you're not missing much after the first bit.

hummingbird egg shell! i have gone through some extra work this year to attract them, in addition to the feeders also setting up a small misting system to shoot mist into the air at various intervals during the day which i heard they liked. seems to have worked! edit: had a close encounter with a porcupine last evening and in looking up more info on them today i discovered that 'The male will dance for the female and then urinate on her to get her attention.' Judging from the map here https://www.hummingbirdcentral.com/hummingbird-migration-spring-2020-map.htm they do make it up there so you could give it a shot next year. Bug sighting, on tomato plant: never seen one like this before!

Cool! I definitely recognize the adult form more. You're right I thought it might be some sort of assassin bug.

i was walking my dog in the woods in the evening and came within an inch of stepping on a porcupine (in sandals and shorts) and my dog barely bumped into it. still got all sorts of quills, it sucked they don't exactly book it from you when you approach so you gotta keep your eyes open

Captain Invictus posted:what species are those? they don't look like asian longhorns, I've definitely seen huge ones around here(massachusetts) before that look like that too. after a search i discovered they are probably Broad-necked Root Borers (Prionus laticollis)
