At least the Tigers and NSW have won their respective competitions within our lifetimes. Follow the Warriors and prepare to be permanently disappointed.

He's a league player, for now. I won't be surprised if a French club with more money than sense like Racing or Toulon make a play for him though. Then he can achieve his life-long dream of riding the pine in a star-studded rugby union team in France!

And even then, where's he going to play? He'll need a season or two to acclimate to the sport, and he's not too far off of 30.

Stats time: Since their formation and inclusion in the 1995 ARL season, the Warriors have only won 7 of their regular season opening round fixtures (1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2009). The 1996 win also comes with an asterisk, as the Broncos forfeited the fixture due to fielding players not actually signed to the Super League, although the Warriors also won the second fixture that season as well. The last time the Warriors played the Knights in round 1 was in 2015. Newcastle won that fixture at home 24-14.

Keep in mind that it's the first season-opening win that the Warriors have had in quite some time. Edit: only the 2nd in the last 10 season opening fixtures since the 2008 one started.

It gets better. Jesse Bromwich was so drunk, it seems like he genuinely does not remember snorting cocaine. He has also donated the $20000 match fee to charity. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11851399

Speaking of league druggies and in "Where in the World is Ben Barba?" news, he's just been sacked by French glamour rugby club Toulon after a disastrous season by their standards, at one point flirting with relegation. Should Barba return to the NRL, he still has a 12-game suspension to serve, which could be something that could be used by another cashed-up French club or UK Super League team may use to lure him over. Oh, and the ARU are trying to get Cooper Cronk into the Waratahs.

Looks like the Warriors will be sold. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11903249 And really, it's another season, another post-mortem. Fairfax has an article looking at it, but it's really 3-fold: 1. A lovely team culture, where you have the senior players who should be setting an example for the young ones acting like entitled fuckwits (case in point Manu Vatuvei getting dropped after dabbling with prescription meds, and then acting like a victim over his suspension. gently caress off, you're old enough to know better, you loving idiot). 2. A poo poo forward pack. 3. Poor recruitment, focusing largely on the backs rather than the forwards. I'm not going to point any fingers at the coaches, because that's happened before, and with the same result. The common denominator is the players, who are the ones loving up on and off the field. https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/95706038/where-it-went-wrong-for-the-warriors-and-where-to-from-here

Mind you, even if we replace Kearney, look at how the NZRL runs things. They put David Kidwell, a guy who had no top-level experience as a head coach in charge of the national team, and they're pretty much wondering why they're getting pumped by the Aussies. The entire system needs to be purged from top to bottom.

Smorgasbord posted:Interested in how this Moylan situation plays out, word is Moylan to Manly, Blake Green to Warriors. I think Green would be an outstanding signing to play outside Johnson. I think it's equally important to sign or develop an alternative to Johnson, who is getting worryingly brittle.

Apparently Kidwell didn't even have a team finalised until within an hour of the squad announcement. Also a reminder that Kidwell was part of a group of players that threatened to defect to Samoa if Gary Kemble remained Kiwis coach going into the 2008 RLWC. And that the last time Taumalolo was wearing a Kiwis jersey, Kidwell forgot that he was on the interchange bench, and sat there in the coach's box, presumably having a sneaky toss about what a smart boy he is, instead of using one of the best forwards in the NRL, whom he had at his disposal at the time. And now he's surprised that Taumalolo has basically told him to go gently caress himself and has opted to play for Tonga, effectively free of charge. Because Kidwell is an idiot, you see. edogawa rando fucked around with this message at 20:47 on Oct 5, 2017 |

A loving literal potato could do a better job coaching the Kiwis than Kidwell can. Considering that they couldn't even beat Scotland the last time a Kidwell-coached Kiwis team played them, they'd be lucky to get out of group B. I guess I'll support the Tongans instead.

cpaf posted:I don't think the power/tier dynamic will deviate from the expected, and I don't think Samoa/Tonga will really accomplish anything outside of potentially humiliating NZ, but the minnow games are imo going to be much, much more interesting and of higher quality this year. I'll just be happy if Tonga progress further than New Zealand, so that the NZRL gets rid of David Kidwell.

The Warriors have a tough draw too, but gently caress it. They could be given the privilege of fielding 39 players on the pitch, and still fail to even make the play-offs.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/98281620/warriors-captain-roger-tuivasasheck-considering-all-blacks-switch Tuivasa-Sheck is saying he wants to go to union ahead of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Realistically, the only team he could play for at the test level is the All Blacks, and if he presumably becomes a fullback/winger, he'll have quite a few players to get ahead of - Ben Smith, Israel Dagg, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Matt Duffie, David Havili, Damian Mackenzie, just to name a few. It's probably a ploy to raise his salary, I'd say.

Yep, Kidwell getting the sack is the only possible silver lining. To some extent, I feel for the guy. He was clearly out of his depth, and it was utter stupidity to appoint him as the head coach of the national side when he had no experience as a head coach at any level. It was always going to end in disaster, but I guess no one expected it to be this soon. Guys like Shaun Johnson and Simon Mannering deserve better than this poo poo, frankly.
