the only way to educate dipshits like this is to let them get pounded in the rear end hard by their own electoral choices. i hope they all lose their healthcare and are reduced to voting democrat in 2 and 4 years to get it back

in the meantime liberals have plenty on our plate just trying to protect the vulnerable groups who weren't self-indulgent enough to vote in an obvious monster just to give the finger to the rest of the country

there is a kind of rabid fever that talented populists tap into that short circuits logic, and some of what we're seeing posted itt is the fever of the campaign has broken and they realize they got carried away and things went too far. it's important that we acknowledge and understand this phenomenon in order to more effectively counter it in the future and keep the rhetoric grounded

however there is still no getting around the crushing stupidity of voting for the guy who explicitly promised to gently caress you over, and then getting pissed at him for loving you over. traditionally, radical populists run into trouble with their base if they don't keep their campaign promises

another amazing dipshit

quote:

Syrian American Sarmad Assali, a Donald Trump supporter, isn't saying she has buyer's remorse over who she backed for the White House.

But she's frustrated and angry.

Like many in Allentown, Pennsylvania's Syrian Orthodox Christian neighborhood, Assali voted for the Republican candidate last November.

This weekend, she watched two of her brothers-in-law, their wives and children get deported back to Damascus from Philadelphia International Airport even though they had US visas.

"It was a shock," she says. "If [Trump] had an issue with them entering the United States, we should have been told about it. It should have been discussed. We should be able to get some legal help in there. ... The way they were returned in a two-hour period, it was just devastating."

Assali says her relatives are now back home in Damascus. But she speculates that if the families had not been quickly hustled back on a flight to Doha, she might have been able to find them legal assistance that would have won them entry rights.

"They weren't even allowed to make a phone call and let us know what is going on," she says. "They had to beg the employees to call us, to let us know that they were being returned."

Assali's family members were sent back after President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday night banning immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim nations — Iraq, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. The ban may be lifted in 120 days or may remain fully or partially in force.

Assali was surprised her relatives' US visas didn't ensure their entry.

"This was our rights, our constitution lists that, so I don't know how it can be taken away from us," she says. "The safety of America is number one, but we should consider what we're doing before we throw it out there at people."

Asked if she's still a Trump supporter, Assali doesn't take the question head-on.

"I am a supporter of the constitution of the United States, and the freedom that we have here," she says. "I don't know what [Trump's] going to do next or if I support what he's gonna do. I can't tell at this point."

look im not saying you are off-base about the shenanigans the GOP pulls, but this kind of cynical defeatist attitude is doing their voter suppression work for them

with politics so polarized, elections generally come down to base turnout. the party that doesn't have the presidency tends to be pissed that they're out of power, therefore more motivated. this is why midterms are dangerous for the party that has the presidency.

when democrats have the presidency long enough they get too complacent and start infighting and defecting to novelty green party candidates. republicans have better party discipline but they get demoralized when their leader is weak and embarrassing. obama is a great politician, but he is also a black dude named hussein. you can't really explain the scope of his victory in 2008 without the utter disaster of the bush administration, that even republicans were acknowledging by the end.

my point is, the republicans have the power, and their leader is historically unpopular for an incoming president; deeply embarrassing and childish on a daily basis; goes against GOP orthodoxy on several key issues; and appears to be letting the GOP push through their most unpopular legislative priorities, like repealing the ACA and Dodd-Frank. even with all the bullshit the GOP does to tilt the scales, the democrats have a big opportunity in 2018, and we should not dismiss this.

it doesn't matter if the piss tape exists, it would be idiotic for the russians to release it anymore. they're hosed.

it would prove the russians were working trump from the start
trump would be forced out of office
democrats, republicans, and all the other western nations that are being subjected to russian election meddling, would all be united and out for russian blood
president mike pence (or president paul ryan), as an old-school reagan-fellating conservative, would happily launch Cold War II, Election Bugaboo

if a piss tape exists it will now only be released by russia if trump himself goes full megalomaniac and is on the verge of declaring war on russia

if nobody cares about russian meddling then why was flynn forced out? why is trump going nuts about leaks from intelligence agencies about the russian connections? why still hide his tax returns? you don't cover up poo poo that you don't expect will hurt you.

more to the point: if republicans suddenly like russia bc it's in their partisan political interest to do so, they can turn on russia just as quickly for the same reason. trump and the gop is a marriage of convenience and everyone else in the presidential succession line is a more stable and reliable conservative than trump. im not naive enough to think that republicans will do their patriotic duty here; im saying there isn't even a blindly partisan reason for them to stand by him if the scandals start getting in the way of their domestic agenda.

a russian hookers piss sex tape would be more than enough reason to kick him to the curb and install pence or ryan. to paraphrase a very successful businessman: what would they have to lose? what the hell would they have to lose?

it's a party realignment and how it shakes out is hard to predict, but i think it's very likely that trump-style nationalists show up and win in state level races and congressional seats in the coming years regardless of how trump himself turns out.

as i said, it's easy to see trump the man as an anomaly/cult of personality. he is anomalous, in his temperament and personality and attention span. that doesn't mean it is necessarily anomalous that his ethno-nationalist core message appealed to voters. those far right politicians are all over europe.

actually, i would argue that the only explanation of why an impulsive clown from a deep blue state with an affinity for russia won the republican nomination is that his core white nationalist message resonated so strongly with much of the gop base (the general election is a bit more complicated for a variety of factors we're all familiar with)

"boomers can't understand how things have changed since they were kids!" -- said by millennials who bash bill clinton for supporting DOMA and DADT

boomers normalized women's rights and relaxed the strict sexual mores of the 50s. they ended jim crow and oversaw vast (albeit incomplete) improvements in the cultural inclusivity of US society that are the bedrock for all of today's social justice movements.

so far, millennials have birthed a bumper crop of neo-nazis and the notion that political power can be obtained by not voting.

lol, you're not compromising with "the dems" in the general election. you're compromising between the ideal and the realizable. the dems are compromising with voters in a country that elected donald loving trump just 8 years after the disaster of g w bush

understand this basic fact: if a dem candidate loses a vote from a leftist, they lose a vote. if a dem loses a vote from a swing voter, they lose a vote and the republican gains a vote (typically). therefore the smart candidate will prioritize votes from centrists over votes from their own fringe base in a general election.

this won't change under a 2 party system, and the 2 party system won't change under the system of voting enshrined in the US constitution.

change has to happen within the party structure, and that's where we have our voice. bernie understood this-- he joined the democratic party to facilitate his run -- and he ran a really amazing campaign. he didn't win, but he sure as hell set the stage for next time around by proving how much support was out there for his politics. trump understood this, too.

i know this is heresy, but a lot of poo poo that y'all take as evidence of democrats being corrupt and evil, i take as them judging a political situation and making what they believe is the best compromise available. they aren't necessarily right about the judgement-- sometimes they are frustratingly timid-- but that doesn't mean they're perfectly happy with what they got, either.

(by the way, republicans compromise too, when they need to. so if you thought both parties were equally bad, but are at all surprised at how bad trump and the GOP is now with the presidency and congressional majorities, there's your explanation. just wait til they abolish the filibuster and have even more free reign!)
