Rakosi posted:Yes, but surely it must be conceded that whilst the Brexiteers have been naive in their hope for a great deal for everyone (and lying about monetary savings and the NHS), there has been an ignored weight of dishonesty in the Remainer camp regarding how much more the UK needs the EU than the EU needs the UK (or, namely, the City of London). Personally, I always have and still do take a very dim view of all of the EU politicians that spoke out in vengeful sabre-rattling tones during and since the campaign. If it turns out, after the article 50 negotiation deadline, that it only really had a nominal effect on the UK then I think it would be fair to accuse some politicians of effectively trying to terrorize a nation into membership. Nobody has really come out of the brexit thing well. It's all depressing as gently caress.

I remember posting a guardian article by david mitchell saying that "isn't this the reason we have elected politicians". It's so clear that loads of people didn't really understand what they were voting for over brexit. Most people find politics incredibly dull and boring. Cameron really is a piece of poo poo, I hope history never forgets what he did to this country.

I'm pretty sure most voters in stoke or any where don't constantly conduct brown paper bag class tests on their mp's like this thread is obsessed with. The failure of labour in stoke is that they just didn't give a poo poo and assumed every one would keep voting for them as has been said.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/feb/27/john-major-attacks-government-over-approach-to-brexit “I have watched with growing concern as the British people have been led to expect a future that seems to be unreal and over-optimistic,” Major said, speaking at the Chatham House thinktank. “Obstacles are brushed aside as of no consequence, whilst opportunities are inflated beyond any reasonable expectation of delivery.” He urged May’s government to be “realistic about the timescale and complexity of the huge undertaking that lies ahead”. May has struck a combative tone in advance of the critical talks, pledging to deliver a “red, white and blue Brexit” and warning the other 27 EU member states that Britain will fight back by cutting tax and regulation if it is offered a poor deal. But Major urged the government to take a more emollient approach. “In my own experience, the most successful results are obtained when talks are conducted with goodwill,” he said. “It is much easier to reach agreement with a friend than a quarrelsome neighbour. “Behind the diplomatic civilities, the atmosphere is already sour. A little more charm, and a lot less cheap rhetoric, would do much to protect the UK’s interests.”
