I hope I'm managing to keep it respectful. All the censorship in games fascinates me, from the outfits in Bravely Default to the "loqua" that the pirates drink in Skies of Arcadia: Legends. I feel like it gives an interesting insight into the culture of wherever the games are being censored for.

I think one of the late-game jobs got censored in regards to the female characters.

It was. A very FFX belt-y looking job (think Lulu,) but a lot of the belts were missing in the original.

Rangpur posted:

This thread actually got me to dig out my old copy of Bravely Default to play along with the LP. Turns out it doesn't take long to catch up when you crank the battle speed all the way up, and turn off encounters whenever you get bored. Who knew? Changing jobs only when you get a new one--and only for one character--actually provides a measure of challenge even when you know the game inside out. I probably could have planned it better, but magic doesn't hold a candle to physical builds for most of the game, so I didn't mind having to basically drop entire skillsets. (A bow-wielding thief is really, really good for chapter 2 and a good chunk of chapter 3 as well.)

I did the same, although I kept pretty much everything (i.e. maxed.) I tend to play for the story though, so steamrolling bosses and avoiding encounters doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the game.

Rangpur posted:

Ah, Florem. Quite possibly the most outrageously hosed up chapter in the game, for all sorts of reasons. Although "Agnes wore sexy clothes, and it was awesome" is pretty funny, both for the delivery and Tiz's reaction. Poor boy's so panicked at the idea it doesn't even cross his mind it was obvious bullshit to everyone. It's sort of sweet. Pity hearing Agnes so close to tears rather deflates the humor. Makes me wonder how if it was intentional--flustered Agnes and verge-of-tears Agnes sounds kinda similar.

Sorry I'm a bit late for replying to this one, but:

This scene read WAY differently to me when I first played it, because I had voice acting turned off. As Rangpur mentioned, I was thinking flustered Agnes. The whole scene reminded me of friends of mine who we'd occasionally tease like this because their reactions were hilarious.

As such, this isn't what I was thinking of for "most uncomfortable scene in the game" - for me, at least in my memory, that title is held by another one that's coming up with one of the sidequests.

Of course, recently playing through the game with voice acting changed my opinion of this scene from "hey, I can totally see this being me and friends" to "Jesus loving christ dude - you should have dialed it back about 5 minutes ago. What the hell, are you not paying attention?" I see now why everyone thought it was extra-cringey rather than the normal Ringabel-ness.

Speaking of puns... Victor and Victoria have punny names of course, but we lack a couple of pieces of information to figure out why they're puns. We'll have to wait to figure those out for... two more chapters, I think? We'll see when Greyarc busts out the character pages. I'm pretty sure that one specific element doesn't come up in them until later.

(If you're playing along, yes - the character pages get more and more info added to them as the story progresses!)

So, new references!

We know they're the Venus sisters, Venus being the Roman goddess of women and love and all that. As for the first names...

Artemia the FurryRanger is kind of obvious if you're at all familiar with Greek mythology - her name is based on Artemis, goddess of hunting and a bunch of other stuff.
I'm honestly not sure what the deal is with the costume, unless it's a reference to wearing a wolf pelt on your head or something and it's just too small. Except it covers the older characters in the same way. :v:

Einheira wasn't quite as obvious to me, so I had to look it up. And then I was ashamed at myself, because I'm also quite fond of Norse mythology and I knew this one:

Final Fantasy Wiki posted:

Einheria's name may come from the "Einherjar".

Einherjar or einherjarium are those that have died in battle and are brought to Valhalla by valkyries. The einherjar prepare daily for the events of Ragnarök...
So it's a pretty drat close tie-in with the valkyrie class, though perhaps not quite thematically appropriate.

This always struck me as odd, though. Is he just so deep into the red pill (:v:) thing that he doesn't even acknowledge Edea's existence? Even if this is the case, doesn't Edea know (or at least know of) him? Something doesn't add up here.

There are real people who are complete dickheads for no discernible reason. My problems with the writing in this game do not lie in the characters themselves.

The one I'm thinking of is a member of that team, but we're probably straying a bit too close to character spoilers at this point so I'm going to stop. I'll be sure to bring it back up if I remember it later on.

It's also a solid damage-dealing class; IIRC, it has the highest physical attack modifier in the game and a couple of abilities that are effectively just "deal double/triple damage". The classes that do phys damage better generally do so though cherry-picking sub-commands and support abilities from other classes, or are considered better due to having better defensive options. It's the first class that can really replace Ranger as the physical damage class of choice.

Pirate skills were pretty much my go-to secondary for damage-dealing classes. The various breaks complemented the beatstick, and the damage skills were a nice bonus when I needed just a little bit more output.

Very much this.

I'm one of those people who played the game. Watching people analyze this stuff (for lack of anything better to do between updates) is interesting to me, because it's not how I typically experience RPGs. Even when I do follow them in LP (archived) format, I'm still getting the plot points in a rapid-fire manner similar to how I'd get them when playing. Following an ongoing LP, and one where I was there when it started? How novel!

Ignorance is (was) bliss in this case - I was surprised by this and other plot points, if only because I didn't over-analyze things. I caught the occasional hint, and obviously knew this would be an asterisk quest because of the blue (!) bubble, but "it was the maid"? Who knew? :v:

I don’t think I ever got over the plot hole that Edea doesn’t recognise Ringabel’s face and how Alternis and Braev don’t recognise him... but whatever.

Pretty much this. It's implied that he was childhood friends with Edea, he was adopted young by the Lee family, he took his armor off to spy on Caldisla at Braev's request, his crew has seen him without the armor on, the spy that let him know about the Vestal's movements in Ancheim didn't realize that it looked like his boss was traveling with the party, Alternis didn't react at all to fighting his clone in the "final" battle, etc. etc. etc.

The only thing that makes it make sense is that everyone but the party already knows that Alternis has a horny clone running around the world and doesn't even think it's worthy of mention. Except for the aforementioned plot hole of Edea not recognizing him either. Everyone in the world has prospagnosia, and they can only make the connection when they're seeing them side-by-side? Hell, the only person who had a proper reaction was Ringabel himself, and he's got the excuse because he'd never seen Alternis's face before.

biscuits and crazy posted:

Doesn't Ringabel himself write all the journal entries though, in game? They're all written from his perspective (Just look at the bestiary entries for the Bloodrose Legion soldiers for example), so the "face identical to mine" bit is Ringabel describing it.

I seem to recall entries in the journal being from different characters' viewpoints, although that may be me getting mixed up with Bravely Second.

Not an edit: Okay, no, never mind. I just fired up the 3DS and flipped through my BD save, and these are character notes written by Ringabel in D's Journal. That, or people like talking about themselves in the 3rd person.

Page 8 of Tiz's entry, page 12 of Agnes' entry, and page 13 of Edea's entry (YMMV, since I'm pretty sure the pages update depending on which story beats you actually get.)

More edit: And what the hell, I might as well post some interesting stuff from my game while I've got it open in front of me.

Final party:
Edea: Templar/Spiritmaster, Two-handed axe
Tiz: Templar/Dark Knight, Two-handed axe
Ringabel: Monk/White Mage, bare fists
Agnes: Spell Fencer/Spiritmaster, dual wielding swords - no dual wield, but I'm using Pierce M.Defense. I assume I tried it out and the pierce was worth more (on a spell fencer) than the 100 points of attack I lost from not having dual wield.
