Ribeiro is gutter trash as a human being but I can't imagine some offense starved team not picking him up for free (unless there's other/personnel issues at play)

Maybe the Wings will. They seem like a team that could use a young, low-cost right-handed defenseman with some offensive upside.

I think they'll bullshit a way to survive until Seattle has an active plan for an arena. Because gently caress Quebec is why.

Or maybe the other way around? Whichever.

It depends on Arizona. My take on the situation is as follows:
- If they keep going, expansion will go to Seattle and Quebec will have to wait for one of the struggling Eastern teams to relocate for a return.
- If they keep going for another year (like if they announce the 17-18 season will be their last), the Coyotes will go to Quebec and second expansion will go to Seattle.
- If they keep going until after Seattle has a new arena plan in place, Seattle will get the Coyotes and Quebec will probably get screwed in favour of someone else.

My bet is on the third option.
I think the NHL desperately wants to be in Seattle, and is leery of putting another team in Quebec due to it's size and status as "l'fier fief de la francophonie".

Although... maybe gently caress both of them and bring back the California Golden Seals? At least we know we'll be getting a sweet jersey out of the deal.

A few things worth noting for commentary:
Justin Schultz surpassed his career best points a few games back.
Sid is back as #1 in the league.
Brent Burns has 10 more goals than the next leading defenseman (holy jesus he's having some season I guess)

Also the Calder is looking tight this year between Laine/Matthews/Werenski and Marner though he'll probably get discounted because Matthews is the poo poo.

Kovalev's was a great player, his reputation is pretty much a mish-mash of people Don-Cherry-picking reasons for disliking him for being Russian. He defied a lot of the usual criticisms:

-He's lazy/out-of shape (see: that ultra-long shift where Mike Keenan wouldn't let him come to the bench and he kept going hard)
-He's not a winner (he won the cup early in his career)
-He's not clutch (he was the third leading scorer on that cup team)
-He's not physical (he was big and strong and even nasty at times)
-He's inconsistent (no more than most similar scorers)
-He doesn't work hard/quite on the play (see: that neverending shift, again)

Not to mention this:

Also how do we all feel about the poetic irony that Sid's 1000th is an assist to a Kunitz goal? I suspect they're still buds and he loves it but I know a lot of Pens fans turned rabid on the poor bastard after the Johnston era.

I figured Jagr had got to be the second oldest player in the NHL all time after Howe, but somehow I forgot that Chelios and his weird golem-face was undying.
52 years, 11 days - Gordie Howe (1980)
48 years, 71 days - Chris Chelios (2010)
45 years, 1 day - Jaromir Jagr (Present)

Looks like you've got a ways to go, Jagr.

Is it popular to pretend the dude that has a nearly 1000 point lead above the next leading scorer isn't the best all-time at the sport? Is that what we're all going for here?
1.921 P/GP and the next closest is Mario who played almost half as many games in his career.

Over the weekend Ottawa lost Hoffman, Stone, and Ryan. The only top 6 forwards left are Turris, Brassard, and Smith. Dzingel can step up, but otherwise Ottawa's pretty much screwed if those guys are out long term. Trading away or losing every tweener prospect over the last year sure isn't looking good right now.

Also, suspend Trouba.

Not to rub salt in the gaping wound, but I'm not sure Zack Smith exactly qualifies as a top-6 forward. Dude had 25 goals last year, sure, but he was also rocking a shooting percentage a full 10% higher than his career average, and he's riding a high-ish one this season as well. Sure he's producing, but he's likely to come crashing down offensively sooner rather than later.
