They both put their sticks on the ice signalling that they were ready but Vermette pulled back for some reason. The linesman will generally not drop the puck in that situation but it's not a rule.

Vermette got the 10 game automatic suspension. The Ducks could theoretically appeal but it probably wouldn't be a good idea. Also Don Henderson, the linesman that Wideman decked, hasn't worked since that game and may be forced to retire.

Yeah, Vermette's suspension could absolutely be increased if he appealed. Refs/linesmen probably wouldn't be likely to give the Ducks any breaks, either.

If you're offsides and can't touch the puck you could still gain an advantage by forechecking or impeding the opposing player with the puck. You have to make a concerted effort to leave the zone once offsides is declared by the linesman.

Sbisa apparently does not have the mumps, just some sort of other mystery illness. Oh good, that means only Tanev, Stecher, Hutton and Tryamkin are out with the mumps. I'm going to have to go dig out my equipment, the way this is going I could be on the Canucks' first pairing by Wednesday.
