I watched the videos of the five goals against the Flyers last night, wondering if Ghost made some obvious mistakes or something. No, it was actually the rest of the team collapsing and ending up out of position and blowing coverage.

Looking at Hagelin's point totals alone is deceiving. He doesn't play the power play, but his production at even strength is outstanding. He put up 37 ESP last year - for comparable, three guys who put up 38 ESP were Giroux (22g 67p), Stamkos (36g 64p), and Perry (34g 62a) - likely with more ice time. He's one of the best at filling the secondary scoring role, and that also overlaps with being one of the best defensive forwards outside of the elites.

Kovalev didn't coast on talent, if such a thing is even possible. While he certainly had great physical ability (which required him being in great shape, which he always was) it's not as if he just woke up one day as a great stickhandler and shooter, they were skills he worked on constantly at a level that put even other NHLers to shame. Kovalev's issues were different, and really it's mostly nitpicking a guy who was a very productive NHLer for 20 years. Kovalev's reputation is as much a victim of the dumber aspects of NHL culture as anyone.

Kovalev's was a great player, his reputation is pretty much a mish-mash of people Don-Cherry-picking reasons for disliking him for being Russian. He defied a lot of the usual criticisms:

-He's lazy/out-of shape (see: that ultra-long shift where Mike Keenan wouldn't let him come to the bench and he kept going hard)
-He's not a winner (he won the cup early in his career)
-He's not clutch (he was the third leading scorer on that cup team)
-He's not physical (he was big and strong and even nasty at times)
-He's inconsistent (no more than most similar scorers)
-He doesn't work hard/quite on the play (see: that neverending shift, again)

justin schultz is gonna get a big fat contract this offseason from somebody because his stats are getting kind of silly now, he's 4th in scoring for defensemen and playing 5 less minutes a game and 1 less minute on the power play than the guys ahead of him. his +/- is also 1 off from the league lead at +30, if you believe in that sort of thing

He really thrives in a similar role to Shattenkirk and others - he drives scoring while taking a lot of offensive zone starts and matchups against weaker players by being on a "soft start" second pair, while the top pair and #1 D take the hard matchups. Same thing with Yandle on the Rangers. Almost as much of an asset as that #1 D, but this role requires another guy to take those harder minutes, in this case Letang, an offensive threat in his own right.

Burke advocated for the rule both out of fairness and self-redemption, but in this case, neither team really bargained for what they got. The offer sheet itself was intended to circumvent the rules, but it wasn't made by either team. It'll be like the league cutting the Devils new ownership some slack on the Kovalchuk fine.

I think both the players and owners probably feel kind of lovely for a guy like Luongo being publicly dicked around for years, and we know all the GMs hated Homer for that. Not sure what other contracts might be affected by this.

Kessel is both a very good skater who can take quick steps, and he's got great hands so he can stick check well. I think he's actually more effective without taking the body on almost all plays. It's kind of funny how he got the reputation in Toronto for not backchecking, because he's very good at it.

3-4 years ago he got injured and never was the same. Brooks was always a classy guy who never turned down a microphone in his face, but he couldn't produce for the Caps anymore and had to go. I'm still shocked we were able to dump him off to the Leafs to make that trade work last year.

It's tough to see him get hurt and never get his game back 100%. He seemed like a really good team/room guy from what the Leafs said about him last year, he was always a pretty good PKer, and he even seemed to handle his diminished role pretty well. Seems like he did all the right things to transition to the "beloved veteran" role. I wonder if an injury-riddled team like Ottawa might pick him up to have a guy who plays few minute and PKs but handles the role well, and won't be salty when he ends up a healthy scratch later. Unfortunately, you know Ottawa's too cheap to do that even if they have the cap space.

Only one team in the league has won more games than them. But Lundqvist is old and bad and their window slammed shut last year and they should tank for a #1 pick because that'll make them win a cup down the line wait a minute they're actually good.
