I think staying (relatively) small has helped a lot too. People don't realize how much time good moderation takes, and it doesn't scale up well: you need more moderators per user the larger your userbase is, because there's overhead time discussing policies, coordinating, ensuring consistency, etc. The ten dollar fee doesn't just keep out the chaff, it also keeps the site much easier to moderate by keeping it small. And yeah twitter is full of organized Russian trolling. Almost all of the "Bernie Bro" harassment trolls turned out to be bots.
