Radium gets a massive amount of poo poo however at the end of the day he built the forums that people still pay money to post on because it has the best look and feel on the internet, thanks in large part to him. Parts may be hacked and duct taped together but it has no real effect on the users.

The search is poo poo, but it turns out that's not a feature people really care about on a poo poo talking humor forum.

they weren't ints, they were actual strings of 1s and 0s that he was simply calling bitfields.

and yet bitfields aren't used in places they would actually make sense - like keeping track of who has platinum or archives. buying platinum moves your entire account from the normal group to a separate platinum group. users with both platinum and archives are a totally separate group to users who have one but not the other. this is also why you lose the upgrades when you get banned - because your account is moved to the banned group and it doesn't record whether it was previously in the normal, archive, platinum, or archive+platinum group.

everyone who has actually seen the codebase says it's an unmaintainable abortion. i'm more inclined to believe them than someone who reads about one trivial problem and thinks "hurr its just lots of little things, fix them and it'll be fine"

or it'll be like titan. it'll start out being totally custom forum software and then after a few years lowtax will claim that it's really a lot back end stuff the user never interacts with, but it works great trust me. and the actual forums will carry on being a broken piece of poo poo

was there a good reason given as why the forum's rewrite wasn't publicly hosted on github or similar? people could help maybe. understand why the old code can't be distributed due to some being proprietary, but getting a copyright agreement and licensing from new contributors should be straightforward?

because lowtax wants someone to actually write it, not 5000 people doing concept art or starting the wiki

i do have a question though

is migrating the forums to something else even necessary?

i get that everything is poorly coded and hacked together but its not like the community is growing and its not like things arent working now. i cant imagine people are thinking about joining and then saying wait that forum is poorly coded

is not having nice clean forums software preventing some forums saving magic that will turn sa into something profitable and growing that i cant understand or is this just looking around at the titanic pointing out what needs painting before it slips under the waves?

the problem isn't people coming to the forums and thinking "hey i'm not paying $10 for this, it's badly coded!" it's that the forums are held together with spit and string and any time there's a problem it costs lowtax thousands of dollars to fix because someone has to wade through the byzantine nightmare to even work out what the problem is. just because it's working right now doesn't mean its going to stay working forever, and as things stand it probably wouldn't take much before lowtax either can't afford to fix it, or just says "gently caress it" and shuts things down.

most folks i talk to like the forums in spite of lowtax rather than because of him. the most visible forum has a toxic culture that drives away new registrations and lowtax comes back in a tone deaf rage to remind us that "gay" and "tranny" are funny words and the sjw mods were ruining his site. it's not 1997 anymore but his sense of humor never moved past there and he'd be better of leaving the site to zdr and a few others to run.

this, but also maybe start cracking down on the people who immediately poo poo on every single thread because everything has to be a pissing competition over who can care the least and how loudly they can tell everyone about it
