Seriously. BoJack always felt like everything was so unearned compared to Moral Orel, whose characters actually grew for better and worse in a realistic way even over the course of one season.

Yeah war hero Skinner was great. One of my favourite flashbacks was when his platoon all had a good laugh over the "up with mini skirts" shirt, even though he didn't quite understand it.

Is he even still a Vietnam vet? I'm shocked they've kept going with Grandpa being a WWII vet given that there aren't many real ones left and it means he had to have had modern Simpsons Homer when he was like 60.

Every time that comparison gif gets posted I think the same thing. Yes, the bottom one is abhorrent and there's no defending it, new Simpsons garbage etc. But classic Simpsons usually wasn't as vibrant as the top one either, because they sacked Klasky-Csupo early on over its animation being pushed too far for the tone of the show.

While it's true that after Simpsons season 1 they restrained the animation an increasing amount, I've mentioned before about how for most of the golden age the Simpsons actually has some really, really good animation that mostly goes unrecognised, I'm not really sure why but some examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx6Lz0rzGX8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrxPpjBASPA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keA-Gykh5-8&t=51s

The amount of work that the animation is doing to sell these moments is enormous, just look at stuff like Homer bounding down the hall chasing the bee in the third video or the body language on Burns trying to come up with a story in the second video and imagine how that would be done in modern simpsons. It is more restrained than some earlier stuff like Marge's famous hair swirl but it's so great at adding visual verve to help communicate the jokes and characterization and keep the viewer engaged. In addition to that a lot of the framing and layout on some of the scenes is really clever and really helps sell the joke in ways that probably took a fair bit of thought, in Homer Goes to College again (god that episode is an animation powerhouse) the framing here when Homer laughs at the professor on his own after not laughing at his joke a second ago and the contrast with everyone else in the lecture hall is genius:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDOkE66_Q4o

I agree with you, I think that comparisons being made between the new style and those scenes would be much more genuine.

sweet geek swag posted:

That is an entire episode about Homer's moral dilemma. He isn't being a jerk for no reason, he wants to see Flanders fail because Flanders' previous success makes him insecure. Homer's hatred of Flanders being about his own jealousy is the foundation of that relationship. Also note that Homer is doing anything to directly harm Flanders, he just isn't mentioning the Leftorium to his friends and coworkers.

But most importantly, at the end of the episode he realizes that Flanders hasn't done anything to deserve his apathy and takes action to save Flanders' business. The end of the episode is basically the end to It's a Wonderful Life, and is just completely saccharine and re-establishes Homer's basic morality.

Also, the imagination sequence where he pictures Flanders' misfortune. It goes to a shot of Ned's grave, and he says to himself "mmm no, too far" then backs it up. Modern Simpsons doesn't have the restraint to do that, they'd just keep pushing it further with horrible dismemberment or something.

That one episode with Mark Hamill was good, I think that was season 10. Maybe it was just good because of Mark Hamill though.

Edit: Oh yeah and the part where Fat Tony's goon and Homer are struggling with the knife. "Give me the knife!" "No, it's mine!"

Was that the one with "Taily"? I watched that one because everyone said it was like old Simpsons, since Lisa actually acts like an 8 year old.

Then the apex of the story is "Lisa, you have to be responsible for saving us both from horror movie villains who want to kill us because I, Homer, am too loving stupid to be the adult"

I like to pretend this is actually a high points of the Simpsons thread. Interesting thing is that Lisa should have probably listened to Homer here; Marge is giving the kind of well-meaning advice that values honestly and sensitivity but doesn't actually work against someone who doesn't really want to hear no for an answer, while Homer has more practical experience and understands that you need a set a hard boundary, and care more about your own safety than hurting someone's feelings.

There's a cute bit of animation I never noticed before too. When he has his hand on her shoulder, he idly plays with her hair as he's listing the excuses.

I watched a clip from the casino episode where Lisa is crying over her lovely costume, and Homer tears up in empathy then wipes it away as he resolves to get Marge back. Just such a little detail that you'd take for granted, he's upset because his daughter is sad and he cares about her. It felt like they were a family even if Homer was sometimes crappy at it.

That always felt like an acknowledgement of it being a wacky cartoon more than trying to go with the realistic family dynamics angle. I mean I don't think it really fit beyond the weirdass tone of season 1 so I'm not sure why they kept it around, but I guess it was supposed to be more like Fred Flintstone getting hit on the head by a bowling ball than anything.
