The recruiting front at IMG is really dull because nearly everyone is committed somewhere. But after last week's draft, several uncommitted OL who were really high on the Big XII are really thinking again on heading to any of those schools. It's the first time I actually noticed NFL Draft results having any influence on the kids.

That's odd. I mean, I'm not aware of many OL that were graduating from the Big XII. It looks like there were only 5 that the NFL graded. I know of 1-2 more, but it just wasn't a big OL class for the league...

Apparently, Texas Tech is where Iowa offensive cast-offs transfer to. This season will feature Nik Shimonek and Derrick Willies as well as now grad transfer Derrick Mitchell Jr.

Tech's RB depth chart is a mess, so he might have some more luck with playing time than he did at Iowa.

Illinois has five commits. None of those players have an offer from another power 5 school. Hah.

Tech just got a commit from a 2* DT whose only other P5 offer was Kansas State.

But he also plays more than half his snaps at RB for his HS team. At 6'1", 270 lb.

So, Tech's picked up 10 commits in the last 11 days, including 4 today.

That's the upside.

The downside, well, let's list out the commits + their best offer:

Alan Bowman - 3* QB - Houston, Illinois
Corey Fulcher - UR WR - No other offers
Myron Mitchell - 3* WR - No other offers
Gabriel Douglas - 3* WR - Indiana (only other offer)
Troy Bradshaw - UR OL - Tulsa
Clayton Franks - 2* OL - New Mexico
Weston Wright - 3* OL - Air Force
Jabari James - UR Ath - Tulsa (only other FBS offer)
Jaylon Hutchings - 2* DT - Kansas State
John Graves - 2* DE - Colorado State
John Scott - 2* DE - Kansas State
Cameron Valentine - 3* DE - Navy (I guess)
Mekhi Garner - 3* S - Navy

That's some cruitin' right there.

There were some interesting rumors about why Bronco picked the job at UVA when he has no connections to the area whatsoever and well, if the 2-10 season didn't convince you his recruiting probably will.

UVA currently has 17 recruits. 5 of those recruits only have UVA as a P5 offer and another 4 only had one other P5 (Kentucky, Kansas, Wazzu, WVU). 15 of their 17 have less than 5 P5 offers and one of those two is a kid who garnered a ton of offers based on early freshman/sophomore stuff and who has just been given a rare downgrade from 3* to 2* on 247 because he peaked early and everyone else caught up.

All of this follows the #57 class they pulled in last year. Bronco is so in over his head it's astounding. It honestly wouldn't surprise me to see him gone by 2018's end.

OTOH, UVA is a mess and has been bad since '07 and sometimes schools in that situation have to forge their own path on the recruiting trail to get ahead. The strategy being to get in on players early and try to hold on for dear life if they have good senior seasons and the other schools start missing out on their top prospects to go after these lower recruited ones.

The real point however, and the reason a lot of people wanted him offered period, is his speed. He is probably the fastest recruit in the country this year and at worst top 3. He ran a 10.41 100m (runner-up at outdoor nationals) and a 6.36 55m (top 10 national time), he is absurdly fast. He set the 100m and 200m all-class records for Virginia last year, too.

Not as a dick waving moment, but Tech's got a WR commit that's faster. Kesean Carter ran a 10.32 100m at the Texas state championships and a 10.35 at the US Juniors.

Anyone got a faster dude?

So far Herman and crew appear to be absolutely crushing it in recruiting. If he can keep this up and pull in a series of top 5 classes, I don't even think anything else has to improve for us to be in contention for conference championships/playoff bids annually. Like if we had tOSU level talent and depth all over the field, we'd be undefeated right now and likely to go 10-2 at worst, with no improvement in the coaching/play calling required. After Mack had 4 years of stellar recruiting to stack the roster from top to bottom, he rattled off 9 consecutive seasons with 10+ wins, every one of them with Greg Davis running the offense.

If Tim Beck is a key part of this recruiting magic and he can help sustain it, maybe we can let him be our new Greg Davis for a while. That's exactly what he was at tOSU in 2016. The coordinator who had the fans pulling out their hair in frustration as the team went 11-1.

loving christ. Since your last conference championship, national recruiting rankings:

2010 - #3
2011 - #3
2012 - #2
2013 - #24 (Mack Brown's final season)
2014 - #20 (Charlie Strong's short class)
2015 - #12
2016 - #11
2017 - #31 (Tom Herman's short class)
Currently #4

Recruiting numbers don't mean poo poo if your coaching staff sucks. It obviously didn't work between 2010 and 2014, and your recruiting has never been out of the top of the nation.
