Come and See (Idi i Smotri) 1985 Directed by Elem Klimov and co-written with a Belorussian partisan, this is a movie that's impossible to make any more. Not only because of the constrictions of film making as an industry, but because of the sheer amount of grueling pain which the production involved. Come and See was censured for years by the Soviet film board for being "too realistic" before finally being greenlit for production in the early 80s. The film follows the journey of a teenaged Belorussian who wants to join the partisans, but instead ends up on a terrifying odyssey on the ground level of Nazi Germany's extermination war. Nothing is romanticized, not even the partisans, and even the climax robs the viewer of any sense of catharsis. The closest thing I could think to compare it to is Green Room, except the intensity never lets up. The sense of dread is constant and ever present.
