My 36 year old wife and I (also 36) still bristle at the idea of having children.

But we also live in a place that's too expensive to have children so we never really had the option.

I gotta be honest but my 2 year old has not cost me much money up to this point (huge stipulation: I work rotating shifts so we don't have to pay for daycare). Other than diapers and extra food, there's really no costs (friends virtually throw their kids old clothes in your direction). But it obviously will get very expensive come high school and college time I'm sure.

Just getting a two bedroom apartment anywhere near work would cost $600,000/$2,000 per month. Daycares are almost non-existent and obscenely expensive. Schools are closing because no one can afford kids. It's not a normal city.

You sound economically disadvantaged. While living, by choice, in a hell hole. Sorry

You're wrong on all accounts. Even the "by choice" part. The wife won't move.

Not everyone has half a dozen cheap, economically thriving cities to move to like Americans. Ours is the best city in the country and it's ridiculously expensive in part because of that.
