I've been wanting to play this since like April and I'm psyched to finally dig into it.

Impressions so far: This game has the best representation of drunk talking I've ever seen.

I really like this game.

The end felt almost abrupt to me, I figured I would have to do all three of the history center/state park/graveyard before any endgame stuff kicked in, so it was surprising that it happened after I only did two of them. I definitely missed a ton of stuff just from comparing my playthrough to the trailer alone. I was bummed when I hit the epilogue because I really wanted to keep playing, but at least I know there's plenty of stuff to look for on subsequent playthroughs.

Every Mae/Bea scene completely destroyed me because Mae just could not stop herself from loving up, the fact that you have to choose between dialogue choices that are all lovely things to say was REALLY effective. I'm glad the party had a good ending at least.

I also really enjoyed doing all of Lori's scenes, she's a really interesting character.

"Everybody has the power to choose!" or "Everyone has a choice!" I honestly burst out laughing at that point because it was so weirdly meta, but that whole scene really got home what a mess Mae is. She likes to think she's a good person at heart but she really doesn't have the empathy or discipline to be one yet.

Also, which two events did you investigate? I did Gregg and Bea and I've yet to speak to someone who did Angus's.

Bea and Angus. Definitely do Angus' at some point, it's really good.

One of my favorite moments of the game was Selmers dropping that loving banger of a poem at the library. I talked to her and listened to her poems every day which really set that up so well.

Anyway, I've seen a couple of reviewers saying the controls are iffy? Can anybody c/d? Does it run smoothly on lovely computers?

I played on PC/Steam Link and had no issues.

Bea and Angus in particular don't change expression much (Bea smiles in the mall fountain scene for I think the only time in the game) but a lot of the other main character have plenty of expressions, they're just more subtle (usually small mouth movements).

While I understand that time is abstracted and Mae probable eats three meals a day rather than an amount between 0 and 1, it does feel a little amusing and also odd that we see Mae go to bed after removing clothes, and then wake up by putting those exact same clothes on without any washing up or showering or whatever.

Scott Benson has mentioned that Mae not showering at all over the course of the game is very much intentional and she's supposed to be kind of a dirtball

She was at school for three semesters, so she dropped out halfway through her Sophomore year. The implication seems to be that she just never came home during breaks in that time. Given how much of a mess she was at college, it makes sense that she wouldn't be able to even get out of bed to go home.

e: I've been listening to this all day. I'm so ready for fan covers/music to keep dropping. And also the official OST at some point.

Is there something that makes people think the creepy dude isn't Mae's aunt? I figured that's what we were supposed to assume once his hat comes off at the end and you get the silhouette of a cat that has the same hair style as Mae's mom. You don't see her at all during the final day, granted you don't see her every day but still.

The main things that make me think no are that a) Molly doesn't have a notch in her ear, and b) as far as I can tell the cultists were identified as mostly dads and uncles, which points to them being mostly if not all male.

Opposing Farce posted:

The game ends with Mae deciding that living and being a person and just existing is valuable even if it hurts and even if it sucks most of the time and even if we're all just meaningless bundles of atoms and shapes in an uncaring universe and we don't matter. It also ends with her realizing making that decision won't stop her from dissociating and being a trainwreck sometimes. She's still going to have problems, she's got big fundamental issues that will be a life-long struggle for her, and she's not going to be able to fix everything all at once. Possum Springs is slowly dying around her, she has no real prospects, there isn't really any hope for a better future in front of her, and all she can do is take things one day at a time. The central theme of the game is this idea that poo poo sucks and everything's bad and we're all going to die, and the only thing we can do in the face of that is stick together and help each other so we can get through the day and maybe find something better in the next one, and that's what the ending conveys. It doesn't go any further because it doesn't have any reason to.

This is a very good summary of it. I dig

Yes and yes.

IIrc the mom thing happened during Mae and Bea's senior year, when neither of them were talking to each other. So Mae could have just never heard about it, but she still knows they live in an apartment now instead of their house so who knows what the sequence of events are on her forgetting Bea's mom died.

She was also kind of a mess at that time so her memory is probably pretty foggy.

I'd say straight up forgetting that the mother of your supposed 'best friend' died is pretty cruel and insanely lovely.

Mae and Bea haven't been "best friends" since middle school, the implication being that they didn't talk much at all up until she returns at the beginning of the game. And there are later revelations that would explain why Mae's memory might not be the best during that period.

I notice a lot of reviews have difficulty with the concept of a game forcing a player character to commit unpleasant actions without implicitly condoning those actions. So, so many games are player avatar power fantasies that I guess it's just become expected. I interpreted it as how sometimes mental illness just makes you do lovely stuff in front of your eyes even if inwardly you know it's bad, which at least in my experience it really does.

This was seriously one of my favorite parts of the game and a wonderful bit of characterization for Mae. She's a dumb fuckup, especially in social situations. I relate to that hard, but even if it's not a reflection of the player, it's a key part of understanding the character you're playing. Almost all games would let you navigate a text tree to find the best choice, but you're not doing what you would do in this game and I appreciate the hell out of that.

Just got the game and am really enjoying it so far. I've had to skip a majority of the thread because it's a mine field of spoiler tags, so apologies if this has been asked before.

1) Is the game worth replaying? I know you have to decide who you hang out with and that locks you into a certain story path. Should I explore both paths by replaying it?

For reference, I've hung out with Bae once.

2) Is there a super duper secret ending where you have to press exactly this button, then go here and collect this thing, then spend 4 hours walking left on the second screen to get it? Or can I safely just play the game to completion and see the ending?

1) Yes, the game encourages at least two playthroughs to do everything (hanging out with Gregg vs. Bea is the big variance)
2) No and yes respectively
