This is something i worked on, on and off, for a couple months actually, just adding bits and pieces here and there. I found this giant picture of a bathing suit lady on the street and added the other stuff. The shiny parts are chrome spray paint. I built the frame myself and covered it in this cool print paper I got from a chinese art supply store.

A string of really good models at the workshop i go to has made me feel more confident about my life drawing, though I'm still itching to improve. Although I have more free time than ever, my attention is pulled in many different directions and it is hard to focus on this one skill to work on, especially when I am back to having fun at my current level.

Side note, does anyone ever get "iffy" when they describe an aspect of their work in a positive way, if that makes sense? Like when I said that the shading's coming along good, I get this paranoid feeling that I'm coming off as pretentious saying that I guess, heh.

I try to avoid judging my stuff on an objective level and just focus on relative success. Am I doing better than last year? Is the shading better than my last attempt? Am I feeling good about what I'm doing? It doesn't really matter though, my post above is kind of narcissistic too, just rambling journal-style. I like to write something along with the pictures I'm posting is all.

Awesome, love the colors.

I just sketched this self-portrait like 30 minutes ago. Mechanical pencil. Trust me that it looks very much like me, kinda surprised tbh. Not the most flattering but by far the most accurate self-portrait I've done.

I bought this cool charcoal graphite (edit) crayon thing. It's really fun to draw with because it makes such big bold marks, and you can use the sides to get some value/shading. Still learning how to use it but I like how this one came out, from a photo reference.

Otherwise I was not that inspired by the life drawing model this week so i kind of just fooled around

Here's a self-portrait done with mechanical pencil.

This was one of these instances that i love about portraiture: as I'm drawing it doesn't look anything like me, I'm like 98% done and there's barely any resemblance. Then I add a line on the cheek, a couple lines on the nose, and boom it looks just like me. Those little subtle touches that bring it to a real likeness.

Small inconsistencies but it's instantly recognizable as the person it's supposed to be so I am happy. I've noticed significant progress in this sense over the course of the summer.

Feelin pretty mediocre the last few life drawing sessions I been to

Krispy Wafer posted:

The one I attend was started by some local photographers, so they hire print-style models instead of the traditional figure models. At first I thought it was pretty cool getting beautiful women to pose, but hard skinny bodies are more difficult to draw and I keep hoping they'll bring in a chubby hairy lady like we used to have in art class. You know, mix it up some.

Interesting, i find skinny women the easiest to draw. Skinny young men the 2nd easiest. The session I used to go to was somehow related to a local university, $10 for 3 hours, and for some reason they often had ballet dancers (of both sexes) as models - those are the best if you ask me, great musculature, fantastic sense of pose and ability to hold still

He kept falling asleep during this pose and drooping his head, so the neck/head looks kinda off from the rest

And this pur e contouring I did to warm up, on the right edge here, using a graphite rectangle, I thought was kinda cool

I dunno why people hate smooth surfaces for drawing so much, maybe it helps that I always wear a smudge glove when using tablet monitors, even my iPad Pro, since it helps my skin not catch and stutter on the glass which I’m sure isn’t as much of a problem on a textured surface.

Your drawings remind me I need to look for some life drawing opportunities near me, I’m sure there are some somewhere in the twin cities but I really hope there’s something not at the university cause it’s a pain in the rear end to get to

Yo I just thought of an idea for finding life drawing sessions. They don't post that often on craigslist, but models sometimes do. Even if they are weirdos, they probably have some idea of the local classes and workshops. I just searched "figure drawing" on your craigslist and found this posting where he says "I am a regular at pretty much all of the local colleges and art schools as well as some drawing co-ops" like maybe you could just email him and ask for some info.

Another resource for free life modeling is your significant other haha. Or, if you are in the dating world, it is a good way to take the relationship up a notch. I'm single-and-looking right now and I almost always do a sketch of their profile or portrait after a couple dates, it's great practice and a little unique and an opportunity to compliment their appearance in a genuine and demonstrable way. I've only done this once (and she had some modeling experience already) but if they're open to it you could even ask for a full-on nude life drawing session at your home (not recommended as a first-date). Tinder for figure drawing models lol well why not? There are all sorts of ways to draw naked people if you keep an open mind.

EDIT:

Thanks! I find it pretty tricky to draw women's hands, keeping a balance between definition and grace, I think I skirted the line here but I agree they came out well. Just gotta keep the shading real gentle I guess.

I do! But when I try to go through the proper ways, like the Loomis method or how Proko teaches it, they all look stilted, stiff and bad. I haven't had anything click for me yet, so it's an uphill struggle. I've tried to look for classes, but the art teachers of my city apparently refuse to work past 6PM or on weekends.

I've never heard of Proko but I've skimmed a Loomis book and found it way too prescriptive for me, with the line-skeleton frames and ideal proportions and everything. Personally I think that whole approach is super unintuitive and generates stilted drawings because it's adding an extra level of analysis to the observation of the raw figure that sucks all the life out of it. That's my own 2 cents, I'm sure it works for many people since it's such a famous resource but I could never get the hang of it. It's a stylistic thing too of course, I'm pretty loose with anatomy and rarely even try to sketch a model's whole body.

I think if the goal is to get vivid and lifelike figure drawings, the only resource I'd recommend is Drawing on the right side of the brain, since it focuses on contours and on observation - the verve of the human body comes from its contours, the realism comes from observation, and you end up sketching a lifelike figure with energy. If the goal is to generate human figures from your imagination, the stick-and-ball proportion-measurement approach might lend itself more to that. But as a basis for drawing from life I've found it totally uninspiring.

Well some issues I can see right off the bat, too much outline on the lips, not enough definition in the noses, the thickness and darkness of the lines in both seem kind of random. I'm at the library due to power-outage induced WIFi failure so I don't really have the time to expand but I hope that's at least a little helpful!

Here are some sketches from this weekend's life drawing session with one of my favorite models.

thank you.

Here's a sketch I just did from an instagram picture. Seeing it in small format makes me see a lot of proportion problems. Love this photo though, wanted to try to capture the weight of the baby, and how the his bottom smooshes a bit as he's weighing down her arm but I don't think I quite nailed it. Was fun to draw though. Look like I inadvertently babyfied the woman's face a bit too.

Very very cool contour drawing. I think it's pretty accurate to the reference photo, and I did get a sense of weight from how you drew the baby's bottom. The only thing is his right cheek is a little too elongated. I didn't notice anything wrong with the woman's face until I read your post and compared it to the reference photo. It looks like you just gave her more of an upturned nose, which looks baby-like, but plenty of adults have them.

Thanks. Yeah I see what you mean, I think I misplaced some contours in the butt and in her face due to the shadows.

OK I don't want to get into a huge debate but she didn't sext me anything, I took the photo myself, and it's a charcoal sketch anyway. No one should post actual photos of someone's naked body without permission that's hosed up. There's nothing identifiable and it's a unique image I drew with my own hand. Pretty much everything I post in this thread is sketches of naked people whose permission I don't ask to post (my own personal sketches of) their naked bodies online. She's not dumb, I don't hold a grudge against the girl. I just wanted to draw a detailed vulva up close and decided to use an actual photo I took myself rather than some touched up porn or a medical document. I probably shouldn't have even mentioned whose it is, I just thought it sounded funny to state it so matter of fact like that.
