Lid posted:Liberal senator Eric Abetz has dramatically intervened in the penalty rates debate, calling for workers' existing rates to be protected, and creating a fresh political headache for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. So if I'm your typical unscrupulous small business owner, i just get rid of everyone (or make some sort of superficial adjustment to the role and make everyone reapply for their "new job") and now my workforce is subject to the reduced penalty rates? Abetz is a loving snake but if he's actually concerned about his constituents then this will do gently caress all to help them anyway, and if he's just paying lip service instead then anyone relying on penalty rates isn't going to be fooled by his suggestion anyway (one hopes).

I think i heard some bullshit on the radio this morning that Labor supported it due to "assurances" from the Liberals that it wouldn't be used flippantly or for political purposes. They're either laughably loving gullible if they take any assurances of ethical behaviour from the Libs, or (more likely) they are totally ok with wielding that power themselves. So basically what Recoome said

This country is so hosed. ABC radio this morning runs a piece on AEMO forecasting a gas shortage and immediately blames government bans on fracking, raises South Australia as an example of what will happen if we dont expand gas production or import capacity, no mention our pathetic export agreements/contracts or how energy companies gaming the market by withholding supply, followed by an interview with josh frydenberg at which point I immediately turned off. If labor loses the next federal election I am loving out of this country

I was tired and irritable so that's mostly an empty threat but, if I was seriously considering it, Canada is right up there followed very closely by the various Scando countries. I'd look at NZ too so I'm not a few thousand bucks away from ever seeing family/friends again. Basically anywhere that's not rapidly marching off the alt-right cliff, has good weather (ie cold, plenty of places to ski and play hockey, mountains etc) and employment opportunities (i think NZ struggles on that last one but I know very little about that)

Faith in Western Australia totally redeemed. What an awesome bit of news to wake up to. Now can only hope WA Labor come through with some genuinely good socialist progress, starting with hiking up BHPs royalties and directing that revenue directly into public services.

Yeah I mean I'd like to cut them some slack because of their recent but relatively well known support for live music, Australian owned, fairly decent (for a stock standard beer you can usually get on tap) beer etc etc but it's really hard to look past a long history of providing financial support to the Liberals, plus their initial response of "it's a discussion we need to have". Getting busted for having a reprehensible standpoint and only offering an apology (on the second attempt once you realise the hit to your hip pocket, no less) just isn't good enough. If it was an issue that is harder to get educated about then maybe an apology and genuinely changing your stance is acceptable, but for something like a basic human right? Sorry Coopers, but my miniscule patronage of your brewery won't be continuing.

I would blow Dane Cook posted:First dog: If you cover up his feet with your thumb it looks like he's making GBS threads piss onto Leak's grave, which feels more appropriate. Also Turnbull has announced (emphasis on that word) a $2bn upgrade to the Snowy Hydro scheme. No new dams but "could" increase capacity by 50%: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2017/mar/16/turnbull-2bn-snowy-hydro-electric-expansion This bit where my terminal cynicism kicks in: quote:The Australian Renewable Energy Agency has been asked to prepare a feasibility study and report back by the end of the year. Big gently caress off announcement $2BN RENEWABLE PROJECT MALCOLM BEST PM EVER ALL IS FORGIVEN to take to heat out of the actual concrete action from Weatherill. But, if the Libs are going into this with any intention other than turfing the feasibility study once it's complete, I will be shocked. I'm looking forward to that dense gently caress Frydenburg explaining why hydro renewable good, wind and solar bad (Assuming most 30+ aussies still have quite a sentimental or romanticised attachment to the Snowy Hydro, they'll pitch it as "oh its always been in our glorious history as a nation of frontiersmen, not like that new age fart-powered renewables"). So I guess the main question I have: Is AREA any good? Havent had time to look up their board and history but if they are actually a genuine cause for good and not some loving think tank stacked with ex-Libs and a leafy name, maybe some good will come out of this!

Solemn Sloth posted:Pumped hydro isn't really about increasing capacity, it's about evening the load through storage. You still need to connect it to a power source, and if that isn't a variably generating renewable like wind or solar you're just wasting money. It takes more energy to pump the water back up to the higher reservoir than you get back when you're releasing it through the turbines, so you need to be pumping at peak production (high radiation/high wind), and then releasing during peak demand. Fair enough, I'm not very clued in on the technical side of things (obviously). Still, announcing a feasibility study which is either going to be ignored or given a terms of reference guaranteeing a negative appraisal (so we'll just have to keep burning coal) is really all that Turnbull has actually done here. I'm still fascinated by that article about the Daylesford community owned windfarm. That loving rules. See! Libertarianism works Edit: I don't know if I actually linked that article or not and I am not sifting through fifty pages of that Daisy Cousens horseshit to find out - https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/mar/15/renewables-roadshow-community-owned-windfarm-daylesford-hepburn-australia aejix fucked around with this message at 00:13 on Mar 16, 2017 |

What about chaining your butler to baby grand in your drawing room? Or tethering the live-in gardner to the front door of the plant room that supplies the fountains dotted about the grounds? Does that count as having a low income earner living in a high income household?
