do you know who has the most points in the NHL since January 1? That's right, the wonderful Brad Marchand. 22 goals and 17 assists in 28 games. Also he's tied for second in the NHL in scoring which still surprises me every time I look at it (unrelated, Pittsburgh with two 70 point players already is stupid). Really glad he signed his contract last summer.

How do you guys feel about this draft class?

I'm not sure how I feel about it. A lot of people are saying it's a weak class but I think a lot of that is because 2013-2016 were all relatively strong drafts with multiple guys who were rightfully pegged as being impact NHL players. The best guy this year is someone who would have gone somewhere around 10th in last year's draft, which isn't bad when you think about it. I think there are definitely some interesting prospects out there (I'm really interested to see what happens with Kailer Yamamoto for example) but it's a down year, which I suppose had to come along eventually.

You think Nolan Patrick would have gone 10th last year? I sincerely doubt that. 6 ft 3 and scored 100 points last year. He'd have easily been top 5.

You're right, now that I think about it I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the consensus among scouts is he would have been somewhere in the 5-10 range if he was eligible last year. 100% behind Matthews, Laine, Puljujarvi, and DuBois, and you could make a case for the other guys in that range, like Tkachuk or Nylander, over him too.

I think Crosby will. 6 in the next 15 games seems reasonable. He might be the only one though.

I could see Marchand, Tarasenko, or Malkin getting there too, but they all need 8. Malkin and Marchand have been so good lately though that I could see them pulling it off. Haven't seen enough of Laine to say either way. I don't think anyone else with 30+ goals will make it.

I don't think Alzner is as terrible as a lot of Caps fans do, but he definitely compares unfavorably to almost everyone else on the Caps defense. Hard to say if he'd do better somewhere else. He's kind of slow and he doesn't score for poo poo, but he's not necessarily a liability either. Overall he's probably a perfectly fine second pairing guy, especially if you can pair him with someone to make up for his deficiencies like the Caps did with Carlson and Niskanen . Either way, my guess is that someone will give him way too much money this offseason - especially if the Caps actually go on a decent run this year. Some of the things he's actually good at is stuff people hype in the playoffs like blocking shots, killing penalties, etc.

Seems like all the rivalries now are pretty boring, to be honest. You have games that get a bit chippier than normal I guess, but nothing like the hate of the 90s rivalries (especially Detroit-Colorado). I think fans tend to buy into it being ~The Rivalry~ or whatever more than the players.

I mean, for me at least, even Bruins-Habs hasn't felt like a real rivalry for years now. 2011 was probably the last time, I think. We had that February game with the line brawl (and Thomas and Price fighting), Chara breaking Pacioretty's neck, and the playoff series that went to game 7 OT. You could tell the team's genuinely disliked each other. Now we have dumb poo poo like "Marchand and Gallagher are pals during the summer" - what a thrilling rivalry.

I wonder how much of it has to do with the addition of the salary cap as well? Used to be teams could theoretically keep the same team forever if they could afford to. I think having the same rosters, more or less, each year helps fuel the fire since you get a lot of the personal rivalries that develop over the years. Hard for that to happen now when players bounce around the league a bit more often. The game not being as violent really dampens the rivalry spirit too although, as mentioned, that's definitely better for the players.

Alright, this doesn't matter, but I don't understand why the Caps are above the Jackets in the standings. The Jackets have equal ROW with them and more overall wins. What are the tiebreakers?

It's because the Caps have a better goal differential.

Tiebreakers:
1) Games played/points % - Identical
2) Number of ROW - Identical
3) Who has earned the most points in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. Columbus is 2-1-0 against the Capitals, but has had two home games to the Capitals one, so they're considered 1-1 against each other for the purposes of tiebreaking.
4) Goal differential. Caps are +69, Columbus is +64
5) flip a coin

Edit: I think he has what it takes to be a good bottom 6 NHL player, like a PJ Axelsson type (I miss u PJ), but he should probably stick to college. I don't know that he could even play top-6 in Providence yet.

11 points in 19 would be great from a prospect now, but I don't think it was particularly impressive for the late 90s/early 2000s. I mean, Jagr had 121 points the year you're talking about, for example.

Also, if you look at the Flames roster that year, it seems like they had a lot of young talent (Savard and Iginla both 23) and he probably seemed expendable.

Also, regarding Hart Chat: barring a huge surge by Marchand, Kane, or Burns - it'll go to Crosby or McDavid. There are some other top 10 scoring guys who I don't think will get votes for stupid reasons (Backstrom, Kucherov, and Scheifele) so I'm not even going to count them. I don't think Bobrovsky will get it even though he's having a really good year. He's probably got the Vezina locked up though.

The Raiders will arrive in three years, time with a fully fleshed out roster. Expansion teams since 1991 (the Sharks) have averaged 57pts in their first season, 56pts in their 2nd season and 68pts in their third. It takes them an average of 4.77 years to make the playoffs for the first time. If the Knights don't get going quickly, fan interest is going to vanish and the NFL is going to take all those eyeballs (I mean it will anyways, but 100%, not just 98%).

I think this fear, which I've seen a bit since the Raiders thing was announced, is a little unfounded. The NFL and the NHL aren't really direct competitors for viewers. Will the Raiders be more popular? Definitely. They also only play once a week, and typically during the day. Most weeks there are going to be 2-4 nights when the only pro team in action is the Knights, so I don't think Vegas fans will abandon the hockey team as soon as the Raiders come to town. If Vegas was getting a NBA team I'd be a lot more worried about it, since the nature of the NBA and NHL schedules puts them in direct competition with each other moreso than football.
